I'm a big fan of Jay, but his Southern dialect is pretty poor, especially for the time period. His accent is rhotic, and at the time the only rhotic Southern dialect in the 19th century was the Appalachian dialect- but his accent definitely has a Lowland Old Southern tone. That combined with a few words sounding very much like General American English makes his accent sound extremely artificial

This was fun! I always wondered why old time photos of folks looked so miserable! Duhhhh they couldn’t hold a smile for 15 minutes. I thought it was the dust, hard work, awfully hot clothes they wore and the lack of indoor plumbing that made them look so grumpy.
