Almost every experience he had with humans confirmed Arlong's prejudice towards them. But I also like that he isn't the typical "good guy turned bad," because he was prejudiced and hateful, even supremacist, before he really even knew humans. To be fair, though, he grew up in what's essentially a ghetto where human pirates would sometimes raid.

I think this is one of the biggest reasons why this flashback was so good. Not only it gave a lot of depth to Arlong as a character but also as a representation of what a vicious circle of racism looks like. As you said he was prejudiced and hateful from the beginning, probably because everything he ever heard about humans from other fishmen painted them as monsters, then every human he met were racists who confirmed those prejudices and so he hated them back, by that point it only makes sense that he would treat every human the same way. But that’s when he becomes the same monster he hates, a racist and tyrannical supremacist, by that point even when he would eventually meet humans who weren’t racist, he would treat them with hate too, which meant that those humans who weren't racist would still end up hating him back and that would only keep confirming his skewed vision of the world (because he wouldn’t realize that he’s being hated for being a piece of shit and not for being a fishman). As others have said, this flashback doesn’t change who Arlong is: A piece of shit, but it does show that that piece of shit is a product of racism.

@@Iqnacio.it also then has a good contrast to the villain of the arc The flashback emphasizes what separates Arlong from him and he's not Arlong 2.0

@@Iqnacio. I agree, but I also like that Arlong is already a sorta bad person from the beginning. He is predisposed to think of himself and his race as superior (and he is not entirely wrong, fishmen super well adapted to their world's environment). The tragedy here is that he could have been swayed from his natural predisposition, like when we saw his views tentatively change (at least at a glance) with his experience with Koala. But instead, his views got reinforced.

It's not surprising Arlong was no match for Jinbei. The guy is a warlord... Arlong was probably third strongest in Sun Pirates crew but eventually was also surpassed by Aladdin as one thing is fighting in the New World and another thing is basically resting in the East Blue where your strongest enemies are Captain Nezumi and Commodore Pudding Pudding...

We don't even know if he was ever the third strongest. Tiger had the highest bounty for being who he was. Jimbe and Arlong received their bounties for being excessively violent against humans during their trips. Everyone else just stayed under the radar without drawing extra attention to themselves.

You're right, it's not surprising that Arlong was no match for Jinbei. Jinbei is a warlord and one of the strongest fish-men in the world. Arlong was a strong pirate, but he was no match for Jinbei's power and experience. It's also true that Arlong's strength stagnated after he left the Sun Pirates. He was content to rule over the East Blue, and he didn't face any serious challenges during that time. Jinbei, on the other hand, continued to train and grow stronger. He also gained valuable experience fighting in the New World. As for Aladdin, it's difficult to say how strong he is. He hasn't been shown in action very much. However, it's likely that he is a powerful fighter, since he is the captain of the Sun Pirates. And, I agree with you that Arlong was probably the third strongest member of the Sun Pirates crew. He was a strong pirate, but he was no match for Jinbei or Aladdin.

Hm.. Well, Alladin knows Fishman karate. He can pull off water currents like Jinbei. Arlong relies more on physique and only water technique he demonstrated was the water gun.

Jinbei was always stronger than along guys, that's why he was the only one to get a bounty along with Fisher Tiger. That quote from the future vice admiral with the long head was Oda's way of telling us as well, when he says Arlongs NOTHING compared to jinbei, he's talking about strength , not actual violence.

It was Arlong who told the lie to keep Fisher Tiger's reputation. It makes sense that Arlong would not thank Jinbei for getting him out of prison. Arlong thought Jinbei bowed down and made a deal with the enemy in his eyes (Marines/Humans) which he did ofc.

Everything that people knew from many years was the first mention about Jimbei at East Blue from Yosaku, then one expected a deep story like that, in the end even he knew that Arlong was dangerous to let him go, he was not able to kill a "brother"...

There are many types of justice in OP world, as you probably remember, Aokiji have "Lazy Justice" but Kizaru have "unclear justice". Not "absolute" as Akainu, and not sometimes merciful like Aokiji. We could say... as long pirates are cooperating, he is good.

Arlong is an evil character , but the treatment of humans towards fishmen made him like that. Even Tiger was not able to overcome that hate at the end. Jimbei and others who are more tolerant hadn't suffered that much or so. People have different levels of tolerance towards pain which we can't judge in a general scale. So I think that we can't blame Arlong in an one sided manner.

You guys missing the big picture the reason they wanted Jinbei to be the Seven Warlords is because he's too powerful for them and they need someone like him on their side to control. But he wanted to take the offer to have an agreement to pardon all the Fishman slaves from the Royal Nobles aka Celestial Dragons. This is the reason why Jinbei felt it was his fault that Arlong did the things he did during the Arlong Park Saga...... If it wasn't for his release from Impel Down Nami's adopted mom Bellmere would still been alive.

Well if look back gecko moria and Kaido were rivals at one point and Kaido is now an emperor. So jimbei grew in strength while arlong believed because Fishmen are stronger he assumes he will be stronger than everyone else so he never thought to improve his strength since everyone else he tends to encounter was weaker than him.

I think he was already stronger than the average fishman - apart from Jinbei and Fisher Tiger of course. In any case - my take on it is still 'at least he wasn't stupid enough to mess around with steroids'

I dnt think Arlong is twisting or shifting the story at all, I think he's right. The difference is what arlong chooses to do with this betrayal, how he reacts to this whole situation. Fisher Tiger was betrayed by humans, he was killed by humans, he hated humans. He did his best not to be prejudice but could let that hatred go. Arlong doesn't swallow it, he just seethe on the hatred and betrayal that humanity has towards fishmen

Jinbei has always been stronger than Arlong, they just never really fought until after Fisher Tiger died. That's why Arlong thought he could beat Jinbei and was surpised at his strength. The navy commander that attacked Jinbei when the trapped Tiger recognized that strength, which is why he reported Jinbei as a potential major threat and the world government made the Warlord offer to Jinbei.

Despite his relative lack of power, Arlong wanted to make humans suffer his reverse prejudice so badly that he fled to the weakest sea, East Blue, to find humans he could bully around. A character forged by the misery of his people but who also chose to actively continue the cycle of hate.

Jinbe was always a lot stronger than arlong, he was 5 years older and arlong called him big bro, them he joined the army and became stronger there. Before Arlong was captured Jinbe already had a 76million bounty while Tiger was alive and later it was raised to 250. Arlong only managed to get to 20million over the next 10years

Fishmen are naturally stronger than the average human in One Piece, but Arlong is still much stronger than the average fishman. Even so, Jimbei is just on another level.

The hype for Arlong is that he fought Jinbei, a warlord. It was never stated it was a one sided fight in favor of Jinbei. So I guess Arlong gained a notorious rep for "fighting" Jinbei.

2:26 Actually its not the narrative, Arlong wanted revenge for the humans killing Fisher Tiger, Arlong was not just gonna stop like Fisher Tiger wanted him to. The narrative was not misinterpreted but in fact Arlong caused the conflict itself to worsen between Fish Men and humans

Why the hell are you surprised Arlong is so weak? He was literally beaten by east blue Luffy. Jimbe was never as weak as him. He was always way stronger, and he's literally a Warlord of the sea right here. Arlong was never close to that level.

Yes it’s understandable for him being mad about tigers death and we understand he’s not that wrong for hating humans but regardless it’s still about how u go about things, how u carry yourself and when u kno what’s right and wrong Arlong was too weak to take on any high level navy officer or pirate Fr but he was so driven on hate he went to east blue the weakest sea found a lil village he could take over w innocent ppl and made they lives hell😑he didn’t go after anybody who had really wronged him in the past or try to get stronger and fight for his ppl he took over a village and took a mother away from her children HE IS A FOOL
