I am trying to decide right now, go for 17" or 18" wheels for winter. I have the XSE with 19" wheels but I am going to put on good winter tires. Either 235/60R18 or 235/65R17 like you have here. After having those for a while which is better, 17 or 18? I do like that the 17's are lighter weight.

Not to say this is the best that could be done, temps 25 to 35 deg F and I am running 2.8 miles per kWh. However that times 18.1 kWH is 50.68 miles. I am running heat, heated seats and heated steering wheel.

Congrat's, pretty wheels. I use the Hakka R3's in winter (225/60R18). They are quiet except for a "humming" noise between 35-45 mph. And yeah, speedo way off, mine show 5-6 miles less than real. Usually winter tires reduces fuel consuption (due to less rolling resistance). However, cold weather bad for efficiency, especially when doing alot of shorter trips.
@JamesKlafehn4 жыл бұрын
You should've gone with a slightly taller tire to correct the speedo a bit. I wanted to go even taller than I did. I wanted to go to 245/65r17 but there is a small chance that tire would rub. The tires were also around $25 more per tire! What. year is your Rav? Is it a Prime? Have you driven in much snow? I feel like this Prime with the always available AWD and instant torque is going to be a beast in the snow.
@tincantiltman24404 жыл бұрын
@@JamesKlafehn Yes, Prime. Wanted taller tires, but COVID and delivery problems. Anyway, my son drives the car sometimes = speedo too low just might be a good thing. The car is okay in the snow, mostly due too weight I think. The AWD operates somewhat strange, at least when driving at snowy, hilly mountain roads. (But I have driven Subaru's 25 years so it might just be my own expectations/driving habits.)
@JamesKlafehn4 жыл бұрын
@@tincantiltman2440 Haha very true! One thing nice about my old Tesla was that I could always check the speed via the app. No one else ever drove it really but if I had a son of driving age that would be a nice feature to have.

I got black rims put on at discount and was an awful experience. 13 trips to the tire place on a new rav 4. They broke the tps, put in a cheap aftermarket one that failed, broke the tire valve. Then the wheels vibrated at 60mph, and they couldn’t find a way to fix it. Oem rims were fine and car has 12k miles on it. I gave up after a while. That was a year ago but I still want black rims. Any idea why my experience was so awful? Was two different tire shops too. I ended up plastidipping the rims which looks fine but it wasn’t my first choice.

Are you happy going with 235/65r17 v 245/65r17 (considering both range and looks)? It's a pretty big weight difference (28 v 33lbs) for only about 0.4 extra inch diameter. With the Motegi wheels, are you concerned that they have a low weight capacity of 1280 lbs? The door frame sticker on my prime SE says the rear axel capacity is 2900lbs, so higher than the 1280lbs x 2 = 2560lbs capacity of the two rear wheels. Still happy with the range? I know it's hard to say with the cold weather...Thank you for making such informative videos and replying to comments. Greatly appreciated.
