Technically speaking, Jim was indeed the first voice of Robotnik/Eggman. The Saturday morning Sonic cartoon from 1993 was actually the first one being produced and apparently was going to premiere a whole year earlier than it did, which didn't happen because DiC and ABC were bickering over the production of additional 65 episodes for syndication which resulted in creation of a separate show deliberately made goofy to contrast the now much darker one for ABC, so people wouldn't confuse the two. Heck, Jim was originally playing the goofy Robotnik in that show's unaired pilot before, I'm guessing for the same reason to avoid the confusion between two shows, the decision was made to hire Canadian actors for that show (except for Sonic, I guess) when full production began. People still like to say that the goofy syndicated Sonic show was the first one, but this is only because it premiered nearly two weeks before the darker ABC one. Bottom line: yes, Jim was there first.

I really love that Sonic is growing up. Odd it took so long... But I suspect the nature of the chaos energy he taps is actually time dilation. Just like it is with shadow. Plus doesn't special relativity say that time moves more slowly the faster you move? So a hedgehog that does a light speed dash must be aging slowly.

What was he Batman in? His Batman voice is excellent, I can't say I recognize it.. All the recent ones I can think of, YJ, that new terrible show set in the 40s, uhh... YJ again... they all had really bland, dry, sandpapery Batman voices, as if trying to be Christian Bale with a tenth of the energy.

I first discovered Roger when he played Chris Redfield, although I had heard his voice before. Resident Evil 5 dropped on midnight at the end of my 19th birthday. Now I enjoy hearing his voice practically everywhere. I'm currently playing Helldivers 2 and Roger proudly announces every single form of destruction we are able to call in. Great episode and great actor!

Trust me when I say Roger's definitely not a "Who" name. First got introduced to him via his Sonic voice after he took over from Jason Griffith, then branched out into the "it clicked" moments of discovering he was Chris Redfield, Batman (In Arkham Origins) and Ezio Auditore (And the narrator for "Say Yes to the Dress" XD ). He's a versatile actor and I like hearing his work, couple of years ago he was Kronis in the 3D He-Man cartoon on Netflix and he knocked it out of the park with the sinister cruelty.

Everyone talks about Roger's role as Sonic or Chris Redfield but to me his Batman voice is the best one. To think that this guy can bring out the toughness and aggressive side in Batman's character. We need more projects with him as the Dark Knight especially after the death of Kevin Conroy in 2022.

Cool podcast. The one co-host clearly has a lot of pain from previous jobs, lol! I still don't know these guy's backgrounds besides Jim's but their stories can be interesting too..He's not my favorite Sonic voice personally (mostly due to the more high-pitched, nasally tone a lot of critics bring up, plus the frustrating voice direction.. Frontiers has a different, interesting take), but I'd say it probably fits Sonic Boom the TV Show the best.. it's all a matter of preference, and from everything I've seen he's a very interesting, talented nice guy -- and clearly has a thing for comedy. I remember first hearing his many voices on Regular Show especially.

@@KairuHakubi I think you’re talking about Sonic X Shadow Generations (I prefer to call it “Sonic VS Shadow Generations, cause it’s more fitting). It’s mostly a remaster/new game for Sonic Generations with Shadow in it. Most of the story is still the same, but there’s a few lines here and there (along with a few different VA’s and the same VA’s that had some re-recorded lines) that were changed for better or worse, depending on who you ask.

40:43 I'm sure Roger Craig Smith is a great guy. But this part bothered me a bit how he didn't at least mention his Sonic co-star Colleen O'Shaughnessey (the voice of Tails in games, anime, AND the hi profile movies). They spend a good amount of time complaining (rightly so) about being replaced for big movies. But his very own co-star who has worked with him for over 20 years, who is fighting and able to break through the very thing Roger is complaining about, didn't even get a quick nod. And I know for a fact, Colleen's name had to have popped in his head. Because Colleen is one of the extremely rare cases who is making a difference on this very topic. Idk... Just kinda rubs me the wrong way how Roger avoided her entirely.

Nobody ever asks these VO actors for their proper origins. They always ask "How did you start in the business" rather than "what caused you to start doing voices?"
