When I was in my early teens I had a dream in which Jimi Hendrix came to me and explained the four "Elements" of Music: the music of the Earth, the music of the Air, the music of the Plants, and the music of the Water. He wasn't actually in the dream in person, it was his voice speaking to me explaining the types of music, and then he played an example of each to show what he was talking about. If you put all four together then you have the Music Of Life. Make of it what you will, but I remember it vividly, and to this day I like to think that I had an actual visitation from Jimi Hendrix......

Stevie Ray Vaughan was a killer Blues player, but nowhere near an innovator like Jimi was. Very few guitarists have been. While Jimi's roots are in the Blues, like so many other guitarists at that time, his abilities went way beyond Blues playing. More so than any other guitarist at that time and even most who have come since then. Even innovators like Eddie Van Halen worked off of elements of Jimi's groundwork.

Bill Graham once had Hendrix playing at the Fillmore for a string of dates. Graham watched him from the side of the stage and when he came off, Hendrix asked Graham what he thought. Graham told him it was shit, just a lot of noise. The next night, Hendrix didn't say a word to Graham. He just got up on stage and ripped into a set of solid soulful hardcore blues. He came off, walked up to Graham and said 'Did that satisfy you?' Graham has said it was the best display of electric guitar playing he'd ever seen in that room. And he'd seen EVERYBODY.

@@Tony_Williams_Right_Hand ... That's just his way. He only respected jazz drummers. He revered Elvin, Max, Art and Philly Joe. I never heard or read about him mentioning Tony. When viewed outside the context of their names etc..rock drummers are pretty sad in comparison to Jazz drummers. Baker is the only one of those rock drummers mentioned who did anything significant outside of their famous bands. He and Mitch Mitchell were the only ones that could swing. I think Bonham could have done it if he weren't so heavy-handed...again... That's the context of the band he was in.

Thing with Jimi that made him head and shoulders above the rest was his blending of guitar sound into an emotional ideal - a sort of common apparition, a ghost everyone could sense simultaneously. Ppl can be great technicians on guitar, great at being melodic, fast , innovative - but not one of these reaches the stratosphere where Star Spangled Banner and Machine Gun reside. You can hear the first and understand the sixties; or the second and understand the Vietnam war. It was more than notes, more than a song - it was, literally, an experience of an idea conveyed perfectly through sound. It’s like everyone can paint: but NOT like Van Gogh...not now, not ever.

Jimi Hendrix is a true hero. It is a pity that his stage act is always emphasized in such a way that it overshadowed his natural beautiful guitar playing. @@stephenboyes5189 There's another British guitar player in an interview, too, who said he saw Jimi playing his guitar right handed, and he said, shocked at Hendrix being able to play that way, "Hey . . . that's my guitar" wherein Hendrix said "Oh sorry. Here you go" and began to hand him back the guitar. The guy said, "No . . . I mean" and gestured a Hendrix flipping the guitar over. And he did. "And he played the same nonsense he was playing right handed. Then he looked at me with this stupid smile on his face." I wish I could remember where I saw that. It wasn't Ron Wood but some other player from that group of musicians.

Listen to your original albums if you want to hear Hendrix deeply. There is a movement lately to downplay the power of his ability, eventually he will be reduced to just lip service about how great he really was. Fortunately many who have heard him strong and honest, we will be buried inside the sound of the First Living Wonder, (after Bach) .

Cliche is what's being attached to his legacy now. Plays with teeth, guitar on fire, left handed upside down, upstaged Clapton. This is all beside the point. He was an extremely talented musician, and soulman. It speaks for itself. Saying that, I think that every bum note has come out by now, as he did have a very short career, and it's all they allow to stay as online content. He was worked in to the ground in life as in death. Remember that when you see sub-par shows (with often bad quality recordings). Also, how many rehashed re-released cd's can the estate come up with?! They haven't produced anything of quality for years (barringg the Song Valleys of Neptune). Go listen to the original albums, and a few of his landmark shows. You'll see scary he was about, and hopefully see just went Jimi is soooo highly regarded, and rightly so.
