I remember first hearing this song while playing ping pong on a Navy base in Vietnam 1966. I had to stop the game and go to the jukebox to see who did it. Brings back great memories. The other song that grabbed me then was Homeward Bound by Simon and Garfunkel. Two weeks later I was sent back to the States, unharmed. Thank God!

it's INSANE: the tradeoff for the horrors of the fake Vietnam War (the Pentagon Papers proved they had lied 100% to america, same as all other wars even ww2)....is that IT INSPIRED / CREATED almost all the great songs from 1965 to 1975! (Half of Black Sabbath's songs are about it! DOOM & GLOOM! King Crimson and all of them! DIDN'T KNOW Shapes Of Things was about Vietnam til now! "come tomorrow will I be older? [or dead] / maybe a soldier...." they also say this song is the first PSYCHEDELIC song in popular music for Beck's guitar solo section! (Dec 2019's AFGHANISTAN PAPERS proved that war was 100% LIES by the Pentagon too. Hmmm!)

The very beginning of the solo has some similarities to "Over Under Sideways Down" which Jeff plays and is on the "Roger the Engineer" album. released a few months after this single. But amazingly - parts of the solo has similarities to the solo work on "Taxman" and also the instrumentation on "Tomorrow Never Knows." But Beck recorded this before The Beatles Revolver was released. Shows how much of an innovator he was.

I don't agree and hardly ever do when someone makes a statement like that. The Yardbirds set the future and they were very much a part of the scene then. The song was about what was happening then. "Come tomorrow, may be a solider," was about the draft and the Vietnam War. The "Please don't destroy these lands," was a word about the Cold War, which was very tense in those years. In this video, they are miming the record and that isn't Jeff Beck playing the lead on his knees. It's Jimmy Page.
@debraweaver6308 Жыл бұрын

I remember the exact circumstance of hearing it the first time --- it was on a jukebox in a coffee shop that we were standing around and looking into --- and wondering --- "What are all of these other songs here (with 45rpm records in the holding rack) which we haven't ever heard? And why hasn't anybody played them?" So, we started playing all of those unknown songs, one by one. The Yardbirds/Shapes of Things was one of those "unknown" records.
@clifftaylor19 жыл бұрын
Never seen Jeff Beck play guitar on his knees before; thanks! Also this song was again a revolution in sound -- first use of real "fuzz-tone" which pretty much made Beck something of a legend but not just the tone...the use/ mixing of mixolydian mode with pentatonic (minor hear it when he is descending on the fretboard) was an incredible feat to every young guitar player (and bassist: thanks Paul Samwell-Smith) in America and beyond. Keith Relf, the harmonica blues-rock king singing some of the first lyrics for a dying planet. Prophetic.
@kevinmalone89037 жыл бұрын
Earl Dwire Satisfaction was a year before this and Heart Full Of Soul I believe had fuzz on it too
@mikeburns98085 жыл бұрын
Fuzz tone aside, there's the influence of Indian raga, due to Ravi Shankar's popular concerts and every major guitarist racing out to get their hands on a sitar. The descending modal mordents have that tang, and I once heard that it was Beck who first started understringing his guitar to gain the ability to stretch a third or fourth. Keep saving the planet, so we Won't Disgrace Our Kind

I think that it was this version- with Beck on lead - that I heard as a teen, that changed my life. It was the first song that I played in my head. (Of course the Beatles were so omnipresent that playing a Beatles song in one's head was not required. Likewise with the Stones.) But that combination of pleading and military beat rang bells: Vietnam was heating up; I grew up with 'Duck and Cover' and the Cuban Missile Crisis; watched the helicopter bring in the dead John Kennedy to the Bethesda Naval hospital; watched dogs attack people I might know. British-Celtic meets American Blues. I always wonder what it was like for kids when Elvis came over the radio. I imagine that it was somewhat the same.

I remember dancing to this in the discotheque "Il Mio" in NYC. It was one of my favorites songs along with Smokestack Lightening.

These lyrics stand the test of time.

The lyrics will always be relevant as human interaction is unfortunately predictable & not in any good sense. Part of the he brilliance is how the music & the lyrics seem as one; almost inseparable, neither an afterthought. Interesting read on Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shapes_of_Things

Sorry to give you a thumbs down but -- while it's a great solo, it's JEFF BECK! There was *plenty* more from where that came from!

I’m Gen X (54) and this song came about before I was born. I am of the underrated opinion that this song is a psychedelic masterpiece.

This one is a more aligned to being a British Invasion masterpiece. Animals, Kinks, Yardbirds, Them, Beatles. Mainstream psychedelic rock was a few years later. Hendrix, Joplin, Steppenwolf, Doors, TJ & Shandels,. They all blended together - the 60's was a decade of some great music - Del Shannon and Do Wop at one end and Led Zeppelin at the other end. Amazing music for sure.
