What Happened To The 6 Players Drafted Before Stephen Curry

As a warriors fan, I was disgusted when they took Curry that year. I was even more pissed when they got rid of Monte Ellis and kept Curry few years later. I guess it's safe to say that I'd probably make a shitty GM.

Obviously there's a certain amount of luck when it comes to drafting players and nobody can measure what's inside a person's heart. Hell, the Trailblazers picked Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan!

I mean if you ask anyone then if Curry would be what is he is today they'd be lying if they said they knew especially when there were so many factors screaming otherwise. Hindsight is 20/20 and a player like Curry is an anomaly. That gamble probably goes the other way in most cases.

The Rubio pick was absolutely defensible at the time. His playmaking was pretty incredible and there was plenty of hype about what he would potentially bring to the game, especially at a time when the 3-point shot wasn't as emphasized. However, when they picked a 2nd point guard in the same draft, and that pick was Johnny Flynn, people started scratching their heads. The funny thing is they had another pick in the 1st round and picked yet another point guard - Ty Lawson - but they traded him away on draft night. Just some puzzling moves.

The Warriors saw the trend and drafted the right guys to capitalize on it. The reason the game changed after that was because the Warriors won the chip in 2015. I think it was more contempt towards his gameplay. No one could think at the time that the gravity he had as a player would translate that well into the NBA. It's just another case of falling in love with athleticism or height instead of what makes a player great--smarts, heart, and the actual ability to play. The best players are not the most athletic. Does it help? Of course. Is it as important as actual ability to play the sport? No. But it is easy to get seduced by it. It's like a beautiful woman (or man): it can be difficult to see the actual person when you're contending with a great deal of outer beauty. It is easy to overlook a beautiful woman's flaws in her personality when you're distracted by a beautiful appearance--especially at the beginning when you have no experience with that person. It is also much easier to judge athleticism than it is ability to play successfully in the league. Do you think the Lakers knew about Kobe's work ethic or the Warriors about Steph's devotion to conditioning or what those things would wrought over time? No way. They're not horses; they're people.
@randomando44702 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. There were so many high IQ players in the league that were nowhere near elite in athleticism, yet everyone kept harping on the same that. Same thing with football -- how many QB's check off all the boxes (height, wingspan, etc.) and turn out to be absolute busts. Smarts, Heart and ability trumps athleticism every time.

People forget that Jonny Flynn played in one of the greatest college basketball games of all time. He played 67 minutes in a 6 overtime game and won against Connecticut. I believe that's 67 minutes of a 70 minute game. He had quite a bit of hype from the end of his college season heading into the draft.

Lol you guys got lucky. He didn’t even want to play for you guys! He told every team before the Knicks pick that he didn’t want to play for them. But the warriors were the only team who were like fuck it! We’re drafting him anyways

@@8kings23 we will take it cause I grew up in East Oakland so I remember all the years of struggling once RUN TMC were gone so ain't nobody complaining out here LoL I'm just saying y'all had two top 5 picks and neither one worked out so you can put your feelings in your back pocket and sit on them 😂🤣🤣

@@lawrencesmith5661 lol you got me there 😭! I hardly see any true warriors fans like you. Most warriors fans don’t even know who Monte ellis is. Also side note we been lousy for 2 decades but we’ve never had a #1 pick. Yet Cavs and Timberwolves were getting it every other year. And when Anthony Davis was drafted #1 some how the at the time nba owned New Orleans hornets won the #1 pick 🤔

Honestly as a Wolves fan the wolves would have destroyed Curry's career. Everything about the front office at that time was bad. The coach was bad. There was no way Curry would have been the player he is if he had gone to the wolves. I really wanted curry here that draft. I personally liked him a lot more than rubio. But I and happy for the NBA to have him playing for Golden State. If he had been a Timberwolf his career would be over by now.

Jonny Flynn coulda been something special if that injury didn't totally destroy his game. Def didn't deserve to be taken ahead of Stef, but one of the biggest what-ifs in recent memory IMO

My honest opinion on this drafts top 10 Blake Griffin-superstar Hasheem Thabeet-bust James Harden-superstar/Hofer Tyreke Evans-misdeveloped Ricky Rubio-injured early but still a quality starter Jonny Flynn-promising but got injured Steph Curry-superstar/hofer Jordan Hill-early journeyman Demar Derozan-superstar Brandon Jennings-promising but got injured
