LYRICS:
Every mornin' at the mine you could see him arrive
He stood six-foot-six and weighed two-forty-five
Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip
And everybody knew ya didn't give no lip to big John
(Big John, big John)
Big bad John (big John)
Nobody seemed to know where John called home
He just drifted into town and stayed all alone
He didn't say much, kinda quiet and shy
And if you spoke at all, you just said hi to Big John
Somebody said he came from New Orleans
Where he got in a fight over a Cajun Queen
And a crashin' blow from a huge right hand
Sent a Louisiana fellow to the promised land, big John
(Big John, big John)
Big bad John (big John)
Then came the day at the bottom of the mine
When a timber cracked and men started cryin'
Miners were prayin' and hearts beat fast
And everybody thought that they'd breathed their last, 'cept John
Through the dust and the smoke of this man-made hell
Walked a giant of a man that the miners knew well
Grabbed a saggin' timber, gave out with a groan
And like a giant oak tree he just stood there alone, big John
(Big John, big John)
Big bad John (big John)
And with all of his strength he gave a mighty shove
Then a miner yelled out "there's a light up above!"
And twenty men scrambled from a would-be grave
Now there's only one left down there to save, big John
With jacks and timbers they started back down
Then came that rumble way down in the ground
And then smoke and gas belched out of that mine
Everybody knew it was the end of the line for big John
(Big John, big John)
Big bad John (big John)
Now, they never reopened that worthless pit
They just placed a marble stand in front of it
These few words are written on that stand
At the bottom of this mine lies a big, big man
Big John
(Big John, big John)
Big bad John (big John)
(Big John) big bad John

Jimmy Dean was a legend. He actually grew up on the same west Texas farm as my grandmother (they were first cousins). When my family moved to Richmond, we used to hang out with him pretty often at his house on the James River. This was during the last 10 years or so of his life, and he was big and bad until the end, sharp tongued, big hat, and bigger heart. When my grandmother would come to town they had the wildest stories about growing up in the dust bowl... and shoot I’ve got some wild stories of him that I’ve seen myself too. True legend

I was born in 68, when I was little my dad would tell me that this song was about me. And I just couldn't figure out how the heck they knew me to write a song about me. Hahah! He would sing along with it and I would join in. About the same time, I learned the song 16 Tons while on a car ride to my grandparents place out in the country. Good times indeed.

I remember this tune from when I was a kid. I like this a lot. Some people will roll their eyes and think this is a silly, sentimental so g but I think it’s a call to be a bigger man. We need heroes these days of the kind that this song eludes to. You don’t have to be a large strong man and lay down your life to save a bunch of miners to be heroic. What this world needs desperately is ordinary men who will go about what needs to be done as living sacrifices for their wives, children, employers, neighbours, and community. When I think about other men that I admire I think of the quiet strong men who did the right thing time and again. They did it with quiet courage. Perhaps they even shed a lonely unseen tear every once in a while as they tried to live with integrity. There are some big John’s still out there. Maybe one or two of you are reading this. My best to you!

I love this song. I'm English, so I don't have the heritage you folks do in the US, but my mother brought me up to love country and western, and I still do. As I've said on other posts, I'm terminally ill but I can still enjoy fantastic songs like this one (which I have on many CDs). Also my partner is called John, Scottish not American, but I do like calling him "Big Bad John". Bizarrely, he has a degree in mining engineering! Lovely song

Plainview Texas is my hometown and is very proud of Jimmy Dean. There is now a section in the Wayland Baptist Museum dedicated to him. It's really worth seeing. Jimmy didn't graduate from Plainview High School because he left to join the military. Years later the high school awarded him and honorary degree. He is probably the most famous person to ever come from Plainview, Texas. Another well-known person was Jim Clark from the Class of 1962 who, with Marc Andreeson, started NetScape. He, also, did not graduate from Plainview High School. He joined the military and fell in love with computers.
