Iirc I didn't actually start that way. He just made the "apologies to Matt Damon we ran out of time" joke at the end of a bit so great episode and it was a huge hit since the idea of Kimmel, who was pretty much a nobody at the time bumping someone like Damon from his show was absurd. But they didn't really know each other at the time. Word got back to Damon and he thought it was hilarious and they've just built on it for like 20 years now. I was actually surprised they didn't have Damon heckling him at the Oscars this year though
