I have loved the Rankin family for 30 or so years because my mom did, she is long gone now and we loved the Rankin Family recording of this. I have heartache knowing all your family has been through and yet, here you are and this is just as strong and powerful even as you stand on your own. Love this so much.

Beautiful Jim...never doubted your voice till the day we both die. Impeccable. I know the sad story of your family tragedies..crushingly impossible... but I hope you know from some old Brit over here that you and your sisters and brother recorded one of the best songs ever in my life. I know, you know I have a big connection and love affair with Nova Scotia and it probably sways it slightly 'cos of Kevin M. but...you live in a overwhelming area of the world for soul-engrained music and players and writers...BUT the original record has the most daring folk arrangement I have ever heard. You and the girls soar across the mountains you sing about...and the harmonies are remarkably perfect ...but MOSTLY it is simply about your arrangement ...the dynamics and those killer bass notes held and then introduced when needed. I aspire to make a record like this before I can't. If I die before you Jimmy.... pop over and sing this at my grave! THIS IS AN IMPORTANT SONG OF THE LAST CENTURY. Love to Canada Nick v E

When this beautiful song first came out in 1992 I was about 24 years old, it instantly touched my heart. At that time I felt it as a lament sent out to a lost lover. It was ageless and timeless, so well written and beautifully sung by you and your sisters and brother. 30 years later this beautifully stark and haunting acoustic version has touched me once again but in a different way. My mother passed away this year, we had a very difficult relationship; your song came to me again and soothed my soul and broken heart. Now when I listen to it I cry and send it out to her in my thoughts and prayers and hope she is well out there...that she knows I wish her well despite our differences when she was on the earth. Jimmy thank you for your wonderful gift of songs; some people seek therapy when times are tough, I get my therapy by listening to your songs and really feeling them. Thank you.

Saw you in Concert in Fredericton, Dec. 2019. There was only one seat left and so I went alone. I swear your music brought my dad back to sit with me ( he was a Caper). You have such a gift. Thank you for sharing it. I didn't think anything could top the version of this you did as the Rankin Family, but this was pure magic, too.

This song has been with me my whole entire life. I am now currently 35, and I’ve been through all kinds of music. This song is transcendental. It is beyond our time and space. Watching this video, I miss his sister’s voice. Time gets us all. I hope you are all well wherever you are reading this. We are transient beings, impermanent

I’ve been in the western United States for almost seven years now, and I so look forward to the new videos you put up. They bring a little piece of home to me. Now, is there anyway you could put a little salt air in there too? 😉

Being a (ex-) sailor from Holland I moored in Eastport Maine in winter 1987 after a very rough trip over the Atlantic.. I remember the beautiful port entrance, covered in snow and the small wooden quay. Since that time and my other trips to the east coast of USA and Canada I love this Rankin-music. I discovered it in the nineties by this beautiful song. Lots of love voor Eastport and for the Rankins music

I'm an import to this country and I didn't grow up with this but this music resonated with me when I heard it on CBC. The vocals can't be matched, no question there. I play guitar and I love the arrangement. Is there any chance to have to chords posted please? Friend from the Old Country.

Jimmy, I've been singing since I was a kid and even penned a few tunes over the years. I was in high school in 1992 so I was more into Nirvana at the time, but I just wanted to say that this recording has sparked a deep appreciation for this song. We wont be around to see it, but I'm certain this one will go down with the likes of Danny Boy. It's an historic accomplishment. I've been riding the wheels off this video and when the mood is right I'll be singing it at parties. (...and you're truly belting out those notes! Nice job Man!)
