One of the other horrifying things about Savile is that he was the embodiment of "The Bad Guy Wins". He went to his grave a hero, had people of power and prestige in his back-pocket, maintained an air of respectability and got away with it all. Not matter how much his legacy is rightfully destroyed now, he got away with it, broke all society's expectations that people like him should receive comeuppance for their atrocities and his victims will never truly see real justice for his crimes. :(

So, my mum worked in a pub in the Isle of Wight when she was younger (in the 70's) and Savile stayed near by for about a month. Nearly every night he would come in for a pint and bring a girl with him. Many of them looked underage (although this is just speculation) but one of the girls talked to my mum and said she was 14, my mum questioned him about this and he claimed he was "mentoring" her she asked the girl this and the girl nodded along with him. When all these terrible things about him came out my mum told me this and she also added that she had regretted not saying anything to anyone for all these years.

I know people who worked at Stoke Mandeville and they all hated him. They used to report him but were told that he raised lots of money for the hospital and if anybody ever reported him to the police he would pull his funds out the hospital, so nobody dare report him. When he used to come to the hospital, the staff would go round the Patients and tell the to pretend to be asleep when he turned up.

The sad thing is, other than what he did, was my friends and other nurses who worked at Stoke Mandeville, put in time and care and really invested in the patients, because it was specialised care, it wasn't easy, were effectively told, by hospital big wigs, to ignore everything or you will loose your job. I know people will say they should of said something, but when you have a family to support, a love of the job and like you've said, it was Jimmy Savile, who would believe them.

I remember low-level sexual abuse/ hassle as being pretty normal back then. I worked for the Royal Mail back then. Low level sexual harassment was kind of par for the course as a young female in a mainly male environment back then. Different days. Different times. I never liked it as a young woman. I'm so happy that I could never imagine that happening to me at my job, so I really hope that it means that things are chancing and women are not as afraid to raise their voice. But that probably depends where you work, I'm sure men with power still abuse it. l was told in the late 1990s by someone l know who worked at the BBC. That there was rumours going around that one of its major stars was into liking under aged girls. He never mentioned any names. The most frustrating thing looking back at the Saville case is that there were so many victims speaking out that were being actively ignored by those in power. Yet where are the prosecutions - the heads of NHS, prison, police institutions? Saville was allowed to commit all sorts of heinous acts with a blind-eye being turned, yet no one was held to account. The issue is... this sort of thing can and, unfortunately, will happen again. People that have power will cover for others that have power with the occasional case coming to light long after the person dies.

I just watched a documentary about Gary Glitter, that was made some years before the Savile story came to light. In it, one of Glitter's early victims said she used to wish she could write to Jim'll Fix It, and ask him to fix it for her to tell on him (Glitter).

Probably one of the main reasons he got away with everything for so long was because people were probably scared of him and that he had dirt on many powerful people that he could blackmail them with. I actually wrote to Jim'll Fix It, to sin g with the Bay City Rollers. I definitely dodged a bullitt on both scores, Some of the acts that he performed on poor children, so tragic and stomach churning. It was the right thing to have his grave unmarked, not only as his words on the stone: 'It was Good While it lasted', I think if it were left it could be a two finger salute to the survivors, he doesn't need to have a mark left.

Lord Mountbatten ( who loved young boys) brought Savile into the royal household in 1967 then when 'Uncle Dickie' as the royal family called Mountbatten was killed in 1979 Prince Philip became Saviles close friend until Savile boasted on a 1980 Parkinson show how he "smuggled" a young girl into the palace for Philip (can be seen on KZbin), that friendship cooled so Prince Charles stepped in and became Saviles VERY close friend till he died, the two often stayed together at Saviles Scottish Glencoe hideaway cottage called Allta na Reigh, the two would exchange birthday gifts with each other and Charles even wrote Saviles eulogy for his funeral. Why was Savile so close to the royal family? because Savile was a child procurer for the elite and politicians too (Savile could come and go at the House of Commons without even a permit) and that's why he was protected till he died. Then there was Saviles 'Friday morning club' where old friends from his sleazy night club days, retired doctors, a chemist and most importantly 4 members of West Yorkshire Police , would discuss events and it was alleged the police officers would brief Savile about the complaints they received from Saviles victims, Savile would then seek them out and either coerce, bribe or threaten the victims into silence.

First time watching this podcast. I had to take a serious break from watching true crime for awhile, it suddenly got to be too much for me mentally. (Gods know how you true crime creators do this regularly. I hope everyone in this genre is taking care of their mental health). Anyway, I was really interested in how you'd approach this, and in hearing the entirety of the case since I didn't find any of this out until I definitely did not illegally download the Panorama special from a famous torrent site (because I moved to America over 24 years ago and Jimmy Saville is a unique British, uh... not so much a treasure now. But he's not known here, at all. I am older than you guys, and I grew up on Jim'll Fix It. I remember my initial feeling was betrayal and that I'd lost a part of my childhood. Then I took a step back and reminded myself I had lost nothing but a fond memory of a TV show host, and there were victims who DID lose their childhood and innocence due to this monster. Your feelings are not always valid, and it's healthy to sort through them and get some perspective). I will say that where and whenever the BBC fucked up, Panorama did not pull ANY punches with that special. I really appreciate the humor and levity you both bring to true crime. I think I may have finally found a way to ease myself back into the genre.
