That Jimmy is one of the most talented Jazz musician is an understatement. The Jazz Organ is the grandest of Jazz instruments. It's amazing how Jimmy Smith is able to blend various musical idioms - church, folk, funk, soul, and Jazz into his play. And he plays the instrument almost effortlessly. His emotions and expressions while playing shows how deep he goes. An Adept and Pure Genius. Talk of how the music makes you feel...... That's out of this world🌹 Jimmy Smith - Jazz Organ Nathan Page - Guitar Charles Crosby - Drums

It’s good Jimmy could play bass pedals. Then, you only have three guys to share the money with. Easier to travel around too: hotel rooms, food, transportation. A big band means logistic hassles and less pay- too many to share the money with, though pleasing for the audience (if they don’t have to pay too much).

Ed, I knew Nathen from our days in DC and played with him more than once. One of my favorite guitarists--the Wayne Shorter of the guitar. We were friends until he died of cancer in 2003. I heard him and Marc Copland (né Cohen) one night at the One Step Down in DC. They did a 20-minute version of "Body and Soul" that I remember vividly to this day.

The first tune is Ode to Billie Joe which turns up a year later on the Groove Drops album. It's easy to see where the ideas originate. A lot of reviews panned the Groove Drops album at the time, but it's actually one of my favorites because while it's not as innovative, the session establishes nice grooves on various tracks where the band really sizzles. Too much emphasis can be placed on innovation and Jimmy achieved so much during these years his critical bar got pushed ridiculously high. Groove Drops is still a very solid album though not quite as spectacular as some others.

@@thomasforsythe6353 I don't believe there's evidence to suggest he's left-handed. It seems like he plays melodies on his left hand when he is playing ballads since it's slow enough that he can play bass on the feet, and since he would always be playing chords on his right hand it would probably feel more natural to keep doing so.
