Nobody could have played Elwood P Dowd besides Stewart. That kind and gentle warmth he naturally has is just spot-on perfect for the role.

There have been other performers..who played"Elwood P.Dowd":"Frank Faye,Jack Buchannan,Joe E.Brown,Art Carney and Harry Anderson..but? You're Right Patrick Rob. Only one actor..could make "Elwood" and "Harvey"real, friendly,funny and sweet..Jimmy Stewart.

I'm so glad that Jimmy Stewart loved this movie as much as I did. For my money, this was his greatest screen role, ever. Nothing captured his sweet nature and essence like this film did. RIP.

I believe the man's amazing class and compassion comes in the way in which he dealt with and described those who came up to him and asked him if Harvey was with him. He's most likely talking about people who were homeless or perhaps weren't completely "with it," as we would say, but he never once describes them in unkind terms or puts them down, nor does he make light of them asking what was, to them, a sincere question. That's the mark of a gentleman, and won him even more regard than he had before with me.

I was selected to play Elwood this year, for my senior play, but as we all know it everything has been canceled, and even my first leading role wasn’t safe from this virus. Even then, the time I spent with and on Harvey, was wonderful. I hope I do get to play Elwood fully one day, but even with my short bit, it was lovely

What a wonderful movie and yes, Elwood is one of my favourite characters. So kind and only concerned about the happiness of others and the simple pleasures of life. Knowing it's the small moments and the memories we need to notice and take the time to treasure. What a terrific movie. I'll always love it. I showed my sons when they were growing up and they loved it so much. They got it. They really felt it. Xx

Two of my favorite movies are "Spirit of St.Louis" and "Harvey". Jimmy Stewart presents any actor a mountain to climb when it comes to skill and techique. I vowed that the play I'm in now would be my last and then they announced the next production was going to be "Harvey". Short retirement.

My mother, my husband, & I saw "Harvey" on the stage in a historic theater(I wish I could remember the name; must look it up on mapquest or old paper map) in downtown San Francisco, in 1973. The theater electric lights on the stage caught on fire. Those old heavy velvet curtains caught the sparks immediately. Firemen rushed in, watered it all down, & people who had moved out, were invited to return, & the play began again. Immediately, when stage lights were turned on again, the fire erupted, sparking more quickly around the walls of the theater, & starting to smoke. Actors & actresses began running off stage, ushers came down the aisles immediately, & were asking people to file out to the various exits. A gent on our row, seated in the end seat, refused to move, elevated his knee against the seat in front of himself, & was demanding that "everyone SIT down & stay CALM", contrary to the ushers' orderly statement. Finally, my husband said to him, quietly, respectfully, but firmly, "Sir, if you DON't move, we are going to climb OVER you." The usher took the gent's arm & helped him up & out, so that the rest of the patrons of our row could exit. After the fire was totally extinguished, & smoke disappated w/fans, the play, "Harvey" was resumed, but w/out any stage lights! "The SHOW MUST go on"!!

I saw "Harvey" the Broadway stage revival with my mom and my brothers at The Anta Theater..in the 1970's. Even Though.."Harvey"the invisible pooka Rabbit..couldn't not be seen..I accepted the existence of "Harvey"..because Mr.Stewart's character of "Mr.Dowd"believed in this sweet and gentle animal..where ever you are..Jimmy? Thanks for giving to us all.."Harvey"the rabbit.

What makes this movie work for me is the writing and I think Jimmy Stewart understands the inquisitive doors the writer opens for the viewers. I get the impression that at some point Elwood had a nervous breakdown, which started his drinking, which is clearly an issue. The scene where Elwood tells the doctor that his mother used to say "Elwood, she always called me Elwood, in this life you need to be oh so smart or oh so pleasant. For years I was oh so smart; I recommend pleasant." Was that the situation, or was I just drawn in by cleaver writing? The script, the acting, the direction all come together in this movie.

I distinctly remember James Stewart saying that "It's a Wonderful Life" was his favourite. So I looked up when that was released ... yep, it was a few years, I think six, before Harvey. I absolutely love James Stewart, but I didn't like Harvey. Oh, he played the part magnificently but I just thought it a bit stupid .... 🙄
