Nothing like a golden wheat field or an cloudless night sky with a couple billion stars. There is beauty, a person just has to look for it. And yes the Trans Canada highway is a little monotonous.

It’s recommended that when walking in bear country you wear small bells to warn the bears that you’re coming. If you come upon any bear scat you can identify what kind of bear it is by the contents of the scat. Black bear scat usually contains a lot of small seed from the wild berries they like to eat. Grizzly bear scat usually contains little bits of bells.😉

No, Mickey D's is not real poutine. The best ones have cheese curds that are so fresh that they squeak, double cooked fries of good enough thickness to retain heat, and gravy that resembles molten lava. The fries and curds are put down first and then the gravy goes down to melt the cheese. Best enjoyed late in the day after a wobbly pop or two.

I've recently become a fan of your channel because of your adventures here in Canada. Believe it or not, you've already done more traveling in Canada than most Canadians. Thank you for respecting our country and your genuine openness/curiosity is inspiring. I'm originally from Ontario and have made Alberta my home for the past five years. When it comes to poutine, they tend to be better out east but you can definitely find a good one at a local burger joint or diner. Pro tip - make sure you're getting quebec cheese curds and not shredded mozzarella cheese. It matters! If you guys need any more local tips, feel free to ask! I cover a lot of Alberta on my channel. Happy trails!

Manitoba resident here, if you don't veer off the Trans-Canada you're right, there isn't a whole lot of excitement along the highway along that stretch. You end up missing out on stuff like Grand Beach (a relatively famous freshwater beach), Gimli, the Pembina Valley, Riding Mountain National Park, etc. But I'll be honest, compared to the Boy Valley and whatnot in Alberta, it's not insane to pass on through :)

I hope you give Jasper a visit as well. It's about a 3 hour drive from Banff, but even more lakes and the drive is gorgeous! Coming from an Edmontonian who visits Jasper and Banff 2 to 3 times a year on average, Jasper is a slight favorite over Banff to me and my girlfriend. It's close though. Less touristy in Jasper and they have Jasper Falls (20 mins outside of town) and bear paws bakery is fantastic!

Jasper is our favourite of the two . Much less commercialized and more natural. If you do the Malinge Canyon hike start at the bottom 6th bridge and hike up to the top. It's much less busy easy to find parking and you go against the flow of the people traffic. At the end you're hiking down when you're tired rather than up steam rocks. It's one of our favourites!

You can bake some steak fries, add some cheese on top Curds are great if you have them and then a nice beef gravy. You can cook a couple hamburgers in a pan and use it to make the gravy if you need. Hamburgers and smothered fries are great together. Sometimes we went all out and added onions, bacon bits and sour cream. Shredded pork is great on a base of fries and cheese and whatever trips your trigger on top. Pile it up on one plate or bowl is less dishes. It is fun to get it someplace but you can make it yourself. Bear are very fast but most will leave you alone if you do not scare them by suddenly being in their area and stay away from momma bear. Stay safe and healthy.

Poutine advice: 1) some fries will be crispy, and majority will be soggy from the gravy. 2) As a Canadian i do not like cheese curds so I do shredded cheese, dont hate me folks😆 3) Its all in the gravy! Vastly different from place to place. 4) Keep us updated on your Canadian food journey 😁 5) If you get a beaver tail again, order the oreo flavour vegan style (won’t include the chocolate sauce) and apparently it’s my fav now 🤪

My dad was from North Dakota and he always said that you could see farther and see less than any other state in the union. I think the central Canada is rather like that. As for the bears grizzle’s are indeed nothing to mess around with but black bears are way more inquisitive and less afraid of people. By all means get that bear spray as soon as possible.

Hi Jimmy & Natalie, I have been following you on youtube since I saw your video of you crossing over into Canada. I live in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, the home of Jimmy's, the restaurant you tried to get poutine from but couldn't because they didn't take credit cards. I went into Jimmy's today and informed the girl behind the counter (her name is Trish) of what had happened and even showed her your video. To keep it short she felt really bad and had she known you were doing a youtube video would have given you the order on the house and told me to tell you that if you come back through Portage la Prairie and stop at the restaurant she will give you a free meal. she feels really bad and hopes that Jimmy's can make it up to you both.

I am soooo disappointed that you just drove through Manitoba....and Saskatchewan. You missed so much! To see anything you have to get off the TransCanada Highway! In Manitoba the Whiteshell Provincial Park is just over the Ontario border and it's beautiful! There are so many hiking trails, lakes and rivers, Pine Point Rapids, little waterfalls, and the petroforms. It's a protected area, quite wild and beautiful! Grand Beach has beautiful fine white sand it's one of the best beaches not only in Canada but North America! Riding Mountain National Park is filled with wildlife....black bears, lynx, otters, foxes, deer and bison, lots of lakes and the hiking trails are great. You would have practically driven past the Carberry Sandhills, the sand dunes are amazing. Although it's not a true desert the sand dunes are high and so much fun to hike through. Northern Manitoba has so much to see, the ruggedness is magnificent. Wildlife is abundant. There are over100,000 lakes in Manitoba. If you travel all the way north to Churchill, which is very remote and a long and more difficult journey there are Polar bears and Beluga whales to see. I am born and raised here and😊😊 23:48 that is on my bucket list. There are so many things to do and see in Manitoba and most people just drive through on highway 1 and complain there's nothing to see. You missed a huge opportunity! Saskatchewan is similar there are things to do and see there too, but you need to get off of highway 1. Sorry for the rant, Canada is a great country and every province has their own unique beauty, so enjoy your time here, but after a couple weeks in Banff you may want to come back and re-visit Manitoba and Saskatchewan!

That looked like a young grizzly - grizzlies are much more common around Banff and Canmore/Kananaskis than a brown bear (I’ve never seen one around here). Lots of black bears around as well. My folks had one in the tree outside their place for three days one year sleeping off a honey coma from the neighbor leaving a huge pail of honey on their deck overnight 🤦🏻‍♀️ - they came out to an empty pail full of sticky black hair. And Yogi sleeping it off in the tree. Looks like you arrived the night we had the big snowstorm up in Jasper. Pretty cold week! Hope you’re having a fantastic time! Try to get up to Takkakaw Falls if you haven’t already - pretty spectacular and some great hiking up there.

Yeah, try to avoid the Fast Food Poutine from places like McDonalds or Burger King. Harvey’s would be the only one I would recommend. The one thing you probably notice as Americans driving in Canada is destination markers are in km and it seems like you are travelling faster because you are used to them being in miles. At least I feel it’s a lot longer when in the USA with signage as you tend to assign time to the distance. I have seen beaver tails for sale, but never got one. Have to try those sometime. I think the only thing fun to do in Saskatchewan might be to attend the CFL game. That’s Canadian football and is a huge event.
