Easily my favourite racecar ever, it's such an insane beast. The '71 Le Mans winning car even used a magnesium frame to shave off 3kg at the cost of a fire hazard, just in case having your feet extend beyond the front axle, no impact protection whatsoever and a gigantic engine just behind you wasn't lethal enough in the case of a crash. That '71 victory (driven by Gijs van Lennep and Dr. Helmut Marko) also set a distance record unbroken until 2010.

I've not yet seen anybody on KZbin drive this car in whatever graphical representation medium they prefer and use the correct gearing. Both the 917k and LH both had a 5 speed box but the k only ran with 4 gears (the 5th, whether 1st or 5th in the gate was blocked off). Try adjusting 4 of the ratios to make them usable and see how it feels then. It's much more plyable.
@dalton-at-work5 жыл бұрын
didn't know that...
@5000TQ5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I thought it was very very strange when he shifted to 5th for the first time. I'm told that in some cases they would use the extra spot to install a second 4th gear ratio because they had issues wearing/breaking 4th gear, so when that happened during a long distance race they would just use the other 4th gear.

You always have something informative and entertaining to say, and having seen the inside while you drive the lap, I'd love to see the external shots while it's on track. I just love that this engine is air-cooled. It's a gear-driven dual over head cam engine, but it only has 2 valves per cylinder. Porsche engineers wanted a 4-valve head but there would be trouble with cooling so they stuck with a 2-valve layout with dual spark.

Hey Jimmer, have you tried it in the 908/3 yet? The Gulf and Martini teams both used the 908 at the Nordschleife in 1970-71 because of its greater agility. They thought the 917 would be a bit of a handful, as you have just demonstrated! As a sidebar, when this was developed in 1969, Porsche filled the chassis with nitrogen and put a pressure gauge in the cockpit so the driver could monitor the chassis integrity. Driver Frank Gardner, who drove the 917 at the green hell, reported that Porsche engineers told him that if the pressure ever changed he should drive the car carefully back to the pits. Gardner replied that if the pressure changed he wasn’t driving the care anywhere. He was going to park it and walk back to the pits!

Fun fact: the roll cage in this car was hollow to allow it to be filled with a pressurized fluid, as a result the team would then know when there was a crack on the structure and stop the car before it completely broke Edit: the reason they did that was because the roll cage was made out of aluminium, meaning it wasn't very strong compared to steel, but it was stupid light
@TheMrTimewarp5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jimmy, love your videos! You got one little detail about the engine wrong though. It's not a 12 cylinder boxer engine, but rather a 180° V12, the main difference being that the Conrods of the opposing cylinders in a V engine run on the same crank pin on the cam shaft. The boxer engine on the other hand has a crank pin for every cylinder, as the cylinders are not directly opposed to each other, but slightly shifted.

Key is on the left so you could start the car while also putting it into first gear. It's a legacy design from the days of running starts in Le Mans.
@5000TQ5 жыл бұрын
Entirely false. The cars were left in gear, otherwise they would roll away. Not only that, but the first Porsche built after the war was never intended for racing at all, yet it's key was on the left. The real reason is simply that in post-war Germany & Austria copper electrical wire was scarce. By putting the switch on the left they saved a bit of wire.
