Al talks about the Taylor Swift NFL phenomenon, calling the Kansas City/Denver football game she attended, celebrities coming into the booth, slipping in gambling references, starting out as a young broadcaster in Hawaii and recreating games on radio with sound effects, and one of his favorite Howard Cosell experiences.

Hearing Al Michaels’ voice during a game is so soothing to me. His voice resonates football & I’m bummed he’s not doing SNF anymore. He’s still sharp as ever & he helped me tolerate listening to Cris Collinsworth during the game.

@@Private_Idaho_1 That’s comparing apples to oranges - Collinsworth is NOTHING like Howard Cosell. Everyone knew Howard - he was the most colorful sports analyst & he hosted SNL. Most people don’t know Collinsworth, who is rather mediocre & seems arrogant. Howard was bombastic & charming, as Al said. He was a caricature, who captivated viewers’ attention & made them laugh. But he knew his facts & sports & was an excellent broadcaster. He was like a mix between Harry Caray & Ron Wolfley, a former NFL player who is the most popular Sports analyst in AZ (where I live).

My 1st searing memory of Al Michaels, was in 1989. Al was calling the WS in the Bay Area in 1989, i think it was in Oakland for that one; and the lights start blinking and ground is rumbling, things are shaking, & poor Al, is trying to describe what he thinks might be happening, 'i think we're having an earthquake Folks?' or thereabouts. He tried to stay on the air as long as possible, but it was inevitable the game couldn't continue and the devastation turned out to be horrific. The whole Series had to be cancelled, but to this day, my biggest memory was Al Michaels trying to explain what he was feeling & seeing on that fateful day.

Al Michaels used to be the only sports broadcaster that I could count on for calling a good game. He's always had a measured calm about his delivery. HOWEVER, this year, I've caught multiple games where he just shows NO enthusiasm. Touchdowns, big plays, big run backs, interceptions etc. He had just lost his omph. Such a shame because he's still pretty good in other ways during the broadcast but he shows NO excitement during the game. Touchdown? Forget about it. Watch the call on Monday night 11/9 when Carolina ran the kick off or punt (can't remember) back ALL THE WAY for a TD! He was basically asleep as he called that. I thought maybe it wasn't a real play (maybe a penalty or something) bc of how low key and unenthused he was. Comon man!
