Sicilian (American Italians) and black families are so much alike you wouldn't believe it. I an African American and she described my family living room growing up with plastic on all the good furniture and the lamp to the T. Also, meals at my grandmother's house with all my aunts, uncles and cousins. Southern family.

As an East African she described my family to the T. That’s exactly how it was at my house too growing up in a East African Muslim family. On the weekends all my uncles, aunties and cousins would come to our house and from morning time to midnight my mom and all the women would be cooking none stop. Watching my mom make yummy food made me a good cook. I love the similarities between cultures!

It’s funny I am also an Italian American, but from a totally different culture over from the north. And I spent most of my life in Italy, surrounded by real Italians. And it’s so interesting to see what is universally Italian, what is Sicilian or Napolitano that has come over and what is just this specific Italian American, New York culture that has grown on its own.

These cultural "stereotypes" transend many ethnicities. My Eastern European grandma took the plastic slipcovers off for special occasions and I do believe the lampshades were covered. Her recipes were never written down. Her "measuring cups" were her hands and labelled: a little bit, not too much, and that's too much:)
