Kirsten Bitzer, actually the movie wasn't made solely for the deaf community, why assume that? One of the themes of SOM was about a hearing person trying to comprehend the world of suddenly becoming deaf. That was accomplished through excellent sound design work. There is also a big difference between a person being born deaf and one who suddenly becomes deaf. Hearing people need somewhat decent sound systems to comprehend the confusing terrible tinny metallic sounds created by the cochlear implants. The SOM sound design person should definitely get an Oscar for their work.
