I guarantee there will be some Greek people and others who might take insult, but the matter of fact is, this is a man focused on the entertainment of the moment. So, I told my daugher that Santa wasn't real just before she started kindergarten. I felt like she should hear the truth from me rather than be told by some "obnoxious" child at school that Santa wasn't real. (I grew up in an uber religious home that did not even pretend to believe in Santa, so I was never super crazy about playing along with the whole Santa thing to begin with, but at the same time, I didn't want to take away that "magical" Santa thing from my daugher. Conflicted much?) I'll never forget the day I told her the truth about Santa. I had sat her on the kitchen counter, and I was holding her tiny little hands in my own as I told her about Santa not being real. Then she asked, "So, is the Easter Bunny not real either?" I said, "No, sweetie, he's not." Tears fell from her precious face, and she so earnestly asked me in her sweet little voice, "So, who can I believe in?" I realized at that time, if I'd lied to her about Santa and the Easter Bunny, how could I expect her to believe me about God? The funny thing is, all these years later, she does not even remember this even though it still hurts my soul. But even more funny? (e.g. odd, interesting, ironic, etc). She has been the one to lead me back to church.

I grew up super religious and was the oldest of four. Another kid told me about Santa on the bus and my dad confessed when I confronted him about it. My mom continued to lie about it, but that was probably for the benefit of my younger siblings. I didn’t become an atheist until I was 19 (obviously unrelated to the discovery about Santa) but it is confusing to me why religious people would lie about a magical entity that doesn’t exist. I have warm memories of believing in Santa - and I still experienced it as magical seeing my younger siblings believe in it, but I don’t think I’ll lie to my children about Santa when I’m a parent. I think it’s probably healthier to just build trust in a parent-child relationship.
