I’ve looked through the comments, and so far no one has dealt with the corned beef issue-so here goes: When Irish immigrants of the 1840s got to New York and eventually were able to afford food that they hadn’t grown themselves, they discovered corned beef in local delicatessens owned by their Jewish neighbors. They added a traditional colcannon, made with cabbage or kale, potatoes (of course) and leeks; and voilà- the Irish American “Jiggs and Maggie” dinner was born. Needless to say, there are many variations on this theme. But the corned beef motif came from the Jewish community in New York. That’s my understanding! ☺️☘️

Im the same as far back as my great great grandfather i have asked and the answer is we always had corned beef cabbage and potatoes in the sunday dinner rotation still do. This thing of irish people not knowing it made me question the world, i started thinking is it like the coddle mostly a dub thing, so i asked an 89 year old Meath woman as im from Dublin if it was a thing in her family and sure enough it is and always has been according to her . So now im thinking is it a Leinster thing or what. BTW all my family never traveled or emigrated we all stuck pretty tight to the same area for the last 200 year as far as i can see.
@hoozle2 жыл бұрын
@@BeautyBelldoogosupreme I'm from the Munster area. My understanding is that Irish immigrants to NY ate corn beef and cabbage...maybe it was cheaper than pork in the US at the time?...and when some of them returned to Ireland, they brought it with them. It became a sort of status symbol in Ireland as beef was more expensive than pork but I think the corn beef we eat today is different to American corm beef. We call it silverside. I also grew up eating ham and cabbage as well as rib and cabbage but my favourite is corn beef. I think ham and cabbage is the most common thing in Ireland. And spuds of course, always spuds! So cool that your family has kept the tradition of cabbage and spuds for so many generations!
