The shims in the fan pulley are how you adjust the belt tension. I grew up on aircooled VWs, it’s really cool to see how similar some things on this engine are! You can see how it’s evolved from its original 1930s design.

One thing to note, the seal around the engine pan also separates the "hot" and "cold" sides of the cooling system and are critical to the cooling of the engine. All the edges of the pans need to have good seals and good rubber in order for the engine to cool effectively. As others have said, the shims on the 2 piece pulleys are for tensioning the belts. to tighten, you remove shims, to loosen the belt you add more. Oldschool way to do it.

I definitely think you should paint the bay while the motor is out. You could see a good amount of surface rust starting!
@lxapproduction

I don't think it is surface rust. The 964 has some sort of insulation matte to keep noise and heat from the cockpit, and that orange thing covering the top part of the engine bay is the glue with which that insulation matte was held in place.

As an aircooled Volkswagen owner it is to keep the cooler air on the top of the engine. Cool air gets drawn from above and pushed down across the cylinder jugs cooling the engine. If the tray wasn’t there hot air from the exhaust would rise into the air intake and the engine wouldn’t cool

Porsche purists hate when people delete the power steering, but for anyone who tracks them or drives them hard it’s a must, the front is so light with power steering there is very little feedback, my vote is keep it as it is! Electric all day, I did the Volvo 1piece power steering pump with reservoir attached in my sr s13 and I love it!!! In the Porsche it's even better because you MUST keep it out of the heat so the frunk is perfect, make sure the main line is AN from Earls 5000psi max (semi truck air line uses this) and the SPECIAL EARLS AN fittings, then just a return AN6 standard line with adapted to barb for the return, and 2 adapters from Porsche rack (metric something with the oring usually TO an6 and an10 for the earls pressure line) on the Volve just give it battery on a 40 Amp circuit breaker and ground and ignition to the ignition in, that's it and It will run at 70% which is plenty BUT with a aftermarket Ecu you can " can bus " the extra wire and most ecu's have built in control which you can tune for low speed 100 % and as you speed up it can ramp down to like 20% over 45mph so you get less pull on the battery/ alternator and you can actually tune the steering wheel FEEL by adjusting the % at certain speeds for better feedback cuz even 70% is more than enough and in a rear engine car it will be way more than needed at speed but silk in the parking lots
