I told that guy earlier that I agreed with him entirely. I also suspected that it was grounding out somewhere. Every insulator has a certain voltage where it becomes conductive. I guess 70kV or less was the limit.

That was me. Let's just say I have some prior experience with this exact problem, and knew what it was straight away as soon as I heard the stumble. :) This time...I'm not 100% sure. He's getting NO spark. Perhaps an incorrect harness for the mag application?

I found out about spark plug wires long ago, trying to improve an original Mustang with "better" wires. Found out the OEM factory ford wires beat all the expensive crap in the speed shops. Aged better too. Spark plug gap? I had a car where the drivers manual and full shop manual carried one number--but the pregapped OEM replacement plugs were always at a consistent different figure. At $50/plug, I hope they at least are platinum tipped plugs!
@johnregan37322 жыл бұрын
Darn, I was betting it was going to start right up! What could possibly go wrong? Back in the 70’s I was racing. We put a high yield ignition on my barracuda. Ran like K-rap. Changed the plug wires out for Shielded aviation/racing wires. Wow it sung! So I was hopeful. It was doing the same thing. Spark was jumping the wires. “Can I get a CLEAR PROP!”
@acronutz2 жыл бұрын
Just a little detail on your bottom plugs. The reason these types of plugs are used on aircraft electronic ignition systems is the ease of obtaining the larger gap that can be used with the higher energy spark of the EI (which you did talk about). Regular massive electrode aircraft plugs would be difficult (if possible) to achieve the .035 or greater gap usable with an EI system. Electroair for example, specifically calls out the BY style plugs you had in the bottom with a gap of around .036. I run the same ones on my RV6 with Electroair ignition. Many of the experimental electronic ignition systems folks recommend regular auto plugs with similar larger gaps. For checking gap I use a piece of .032 safety wire from my tool box and set the plugs up for a easy/slightly loose fit of the safety wire gauge.

HA, I was saying the same thing about your spark plug wires, I did something similar to an old sports car I had in 1976. Upgrade the ignition to a "Capacitive DIscharge" with a heathkit. It blew the high voltage through the stock plug wires. Upgraded those and double the spark plug gap. Smooth, more power and better gas mileage.

You should get some griplock ties instead of those cheap zip ties. Also a lightspeed ignition would be the way to go. For you to get to 250 you're going to have to cut drag wherever possible. Cooling drag is probably the first thing I'd go after.

At RPM, this Super Boat's Motar was cross-firin' it's sparkalotors to beat the band to just go 112MPH = Piss Pore!! I snipped the hoops, freed the wires, ran them perpendicular, which made it look like a fazed out lady of the night, but when fired up, it ran like a rapid ape!! We got our speed equipment out, 2 pair of swim trunks & 2 pair of hold-me-tight sunglasses, & neighbor drove (Piloted) us 148MPH! Neighbor made his lost bets go away about 12 fold, AND I GOT MY BEER!! Sometimes ya just gotta jump thru the hoops to make your motar very noisy...good luck with the plane Jimmy!!!

Power leads to the mag switch, it's possible the switch is bad. Separate leads for the starter function lets the starter engage, but if the switch is bad it's cutting the flow of juice out of the mags by opening the circuit. Simple to check with an ohm meter.

Firing order would remain the same and number one hole would be the same spot.. It would just look a bit different when viewed from the back.
