230 k for the airplane, no idea for renovations but would love to see the results
@EpicJake07
@EpicJake07 Жыл бұрын
@@kimo3888 It's going to cost more than that. $450k alone for the flight control surfaces (yes crazy). not to mention inspections and getting it recertified to fly by the FAA; the engines (keep in mind this aircraft was built in 1962, and only about 202 of them were built, so finding airworthy engines with low hours is going to be a challenge (specifically the JT-12A-8). you'd be better off replacing them with more efficient and newer CFM engines (some companies have apparently done this before, but still very expensive). unfortunately, it may be very unlikely that this aircraft will ever fly again (say, for instance, that the airframe is found to have a major issue and can never be airworthy again.. not to mention the absurd cost). nonetheless, it would be very cool to put some high-hour engines on it and simply get it to the point where it can taxi using its own power. I think that would be more than satisfactory. anyway, this is unquestionably a cool project and I look forward to setting the results. as do you. (I apologise for writing an entire paragraph lmao)

This was a plane owned by Elvis, but wasn’t one he regularly flew on. I think was basically bought for his wife or daughter thinking they’d use it. It basically just got parked and not used. One of the big problems with planes is they still cost a lot to keep up even if it’s just parked and sitting. So, they tend to get left alone then if someone wants to get it flying again it takes nearly a full rebuild of everything.

Maybe if people knew that Howard Hughes and Elvis were very close. Gives reason why it was left in Roswell. It sat in the exact spot they wanted it left, I'm assuming as nothing with them was random. It's said, Elvis partnered up with Howard Hughes and was at the helm of MacIntosh/IBM computers, ground floor. Elvis is good at what he does. @@gillespriod5509 well you have breakers so it’s unlikely to do much, things just won’t work. It’s also where it’s been laid up there isn’t much around that could cause damage . Reminds me of these old migs that were preserved in the Iraqi desert during the war there. They dug them up and they were just like the day they were buried by saddam. Still impressive though nothing went bang. The gpu will have trip systems on it and would trip if there was a current draw beyond a threshold It’s hard to tell what was energised in the video, seems to be the battery bus which is the low voltage side . I don’t know how jetstars are started (I.E pneumatic or motor) but if it’s the latter then the big current items are missing Since the inside seems preserved well then probably there isn’t scope for corrosion especially when they cocoon the planes in storage there anyway. TLDR I wouldn’t do such a thing to a plane stored in New England or somewhere wet but in the desert things are different

Not worth restoring, the Jetstar doesn't have the book value, especially considering he spent over 200k on it. A Jetstar with low engine time is only worth 500k. On top of that, by the time he's got it flight worthy and passed all the inspections, he's over 1 million in. I own a jet commander 1121, and a simple corrosion inspection cost me 20k. He could maybe get 50k in scrap, but that's really it.

Also invite any and all Elvis lovers to con and see it with a "donation" for the cause to see if you can at least get the instrument panel working and blinking, and get some aluminum on the outside to make it look "cool" and stop the birds! Careful what you wish for! Many years ago I had an infamous Porsche at my shop that had once belonged to Nicolas Cage, it had been stolen, dumped in a lake and found many years later, It was brought to me to restore, a local newspaper ran a story about it and the next day I was getting women from all over showing up to see it, I actually saw quite a few kneel down and kiss the driver's seat! I didn't have the heart to tell them that I'd been setting in it all morning working on dash wiring! This went on everyday for about 2 weeks! My situation it was just Nic Cage, just imagine the stuff crazy Elvis fans would be doing!

I’m really not surprised that a lot of the items still worked. If the plane was made for Elvis, I’m sure the utmost attention to detail was put into it. And everything was top quality. So I’m not surprised. So long as there’s no rodent damage. Good luck with your future plans. P.S. I was born in Germany in 1958, Elvis actually held me in his arms when I was a baby. But that’s another story for another day.

Can't believe how awesome it has to be to own a plane that Elvis himself owned and sat onboard. All that for 250 grand. It's nothing really compared to how much you gotta pay for some for the stuff Elvis owned. I wasn't even aware such a plane existed and was in such a good condition. You can probably offer paid tours to the public. If you can get sponsors to get this baby in the air - it would be just fantastic! Fingers crossed it happens.

I'm saying all of this but I'm trying not to be rude. I'm a FAA certified Airframe and powerplant mechanic. You can not just pick up the radio on an aviation frequency and just call in mic check mic check. Every aircraft has an identifier from their tail number if private. Flight number if commercial. You need to call in with that number proper. you are talking to other aircraft and ATC on that radio. ATC is quite busy handling aircraft keeping them safe to be interrupted like that. Chances are the fuel in the tanks is no good. May also have water in the tanks due to it sitting there so long. Those emergency lights you saw in the cabin run off of batteries. Those batteries will all need to be replaced. The airframe itself will need a full inspection nose to tail inside and out for all systems and structure. Chances are the tires will have dry rot seeing its age and they hydraulic fluids will need to be drained and bleed out due to its age. Seeing it hasn't been touched it will need full C or D check to be considered airworthy. You will need to find or replace all the missing avionics in the cockpit as well. The engines or powerplants will need complete overhaul possibly even need to be replaced due to corrosion. Your BIG problems are anything structural is good or bad and you may need new engines for it as well. Its be great to see that aircraft come back to life. But it will need a ton of work to do so at that point. If it sat out side like that for a very long time. There can be a ton more wrong with it than you may realize. An IA completing a C or D check and a flight airworthiness check will tell you what's wrong and what needs to be fixed or replaced. You will also need to have test flights done to ensure all is well. If you can fly that is good. If not you will need to find pilots that are qualified to fly that type of aircraft and have the proper ratings. If you have any questions. I can try to help if needed. Wishing you the best of luck with the aircraft though. Again sorry if I came of rude.

In the early 80’s I worked on that airplane with a company called Unique out of Lubbock. Back then it was owned by a local oil man named Roy McKay. The plane looked like new and was kept in a hangar up until then. I hope you don’t expect it to fly again… Not to be the bearer of bad news, but when we removed the tops of the wings, I found a crack in the structure of the left (I think) wing. We stopped work for a week and came back to see the crack drilled and filled and we finished the job, but I honestly don’t think it ever flew after that.

I'd be very interested to know the reason it was grounded. Did it go to you for a maintenance check when you discovered the crack? Was the crack in one of the spars? If the crack was repaired why didn't it fly again? Looks like it was owned by Mcay for years afterwards so I guess he used it as a parts donor. I'd love to hear more about it.

@@bobbyrayofthefamilysmith24 Right after high school I was looking for cash and a family friend with connections at the air field hooked me up with the techs from Unique, who hired me and one other person to help remove the top skin from the wing, sop up any remaining fuel and clean all the old sealants off the spars. No one ever mentioned the Elvis connection. A couple of days into the job, I saw a crack in the leading edge, close to where it meets the fuselage. I alerted one of the techs who muttered a ton of profanities and told us to go home until they figured things out. We were called back a few days later and it looked like a pin of some sort was inserted in the crack to fix it. We finished cleaning out the wings and that is the last time I saw the plane until it came up for sale and the Elvis story surfaced.

@@anthonycowdrey5783 Ah right I thought you was an A&P still an interesting story. It sounds like the crack was in the skin/leading edge fairing from your description. That's something that would be quite easily repaired. Unless the crack was in the actual wing spar itself in which case that could definitely write off an aircraft. I believe this AC would have been around 25 years old by the mid 80s so it's possible the owner decided it was worth more as a parts donor than to repair especially if he owned a fleet.

I thought he was going to say that he paid $250 for it 😂 Someone had a nice payday. When it's done up though I'm guessing it'll be worth millions. The fact that much of the electronics still works is a testament to the engineering and build quality. That's why these things are so damn expensive. Good of John Cena to show up and have a look around as well.

God bless you for your motivation in acquiring that aircraft and all the happiness in healing its sould. I remember maybe within the last 10 years or so, there was an article somewhere about that aircraft was either up for auction and did not get any bids or was eventually going to be up for auction, can't remember. 100% from the heart I wanted to be that plane's savior and purchase it... don't have that kind of money of course. My parents were super Elvis fans in the 70's and 80's and I can still remember seeing one of their God knows how many pics related to Elvis and one of that plane. As a kid, it looked like a combo of a fighter plane and a jumbo jet. There is something magical about that model of aircraft and then on top of it Elvis owned it, very special. I love that color scheme. It is so heartbreaking it has been tortured by the desert sun for so long. Good luck to you with the restoration. It is going to be a very long and intricate process. Don't cut any corner bud, make it safe, thorough, and better than it was new. We truly look forward to whatever you post about the process.
