Can you add the Active return amplifier to the main cable line coming into the house even if that same line serves 4 other single TV cable lines of which one of those 4 lines serves one of the TV's & the cable modem?

My modem seems to be dropping connections once in a while to where it is noticeable. 32 down stream channels with power range from -2 - 1.5 dBmV (Signal to Noise Ratio is 40-42 dB) 8 upstream channels (5 are active in my area) ... the power range for this 48-53 dBmV Do you think an amplitfer is worth my time? I have already tried the arris amplifier with placing it in different spots in my coax line. The best result I seen was just before the modem to where it connected to 1 down stream channel but could not establish an upstream. (Ending up return the amplifier).

Hi.i want to double check that if I install a active return cable amplifier, do I have to connect the power to the amplifier too? I know it sounds silly but none of the installation videos talked about this.
@youngtrotsky3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the amplifier should come with a power supply that plugs into an electrical outlet and connects to the amplifier with a coax cable to the connector that says "PWR IN" or "DC IN", normally the top left connector.

So how do you hook up your cable box?

What's the best way to connect 2 TVs and one modem? Should I use a tap let's say 3,5 + 8 +8 dB + one amp for the TV? Or will a regular 3 way splitter do? I think a 3-way does 5,7 dB on each
@omnilife66603 жыл бұрын
my arris upstream is 43.75 DBMv, wich is high by the time you use the internet alot or game online, so as far as I understand, the booster helps drop the upstream so you have less resistance, less resistance means better faster connection. i do reccomend upgrading all your coax cables, cut all the extra excess you dont need, install your own moden, install new router and replace your old coax cables. I only use wireless wifi rather than directly connecting pc ethernet to modem.

They have updated the specs, -7 to +10 inbound old specs, now they can run from close to -7ish to +13, on the return 40-50db old, new 38-53db. Lower your are on the return you are closer to the noice floor. That means any noise on the lines will have much more significant impact rather if the modem is running at higher rate. Adding that amplifier will throw the modem out of spec.

I'm glad you fixed your issue that really the cable company should have fixed but I know what a pain dealing with them is even for basic stuff... I think the main take away here is different modems like or (tolerate) different values... You fixed your upstream pwr but your down stream is now out of spec.. tho this seems to work for you and your modem... Mine I had the opposite the up stream was fine ( in the low 40's) but the modem was complaining about the down stream power which wasn't even bad around 6-8.. I end up dropping it down to around -1 to 1 up is now in the low 50's but my router doesn't mind this and I no longer get random disconnect every few days.....

Sorry for the late reply... Your cable internet provider should be able to "choke" the downstream as attenuation can be done at your Main Point of Entry to your house. My issue was that the 'collection office' where all the cable feeds combine was too far away and cable internet provider did not want to involve engineer to add a satelite boosting station between me and the combiner office.

I still have a another Splitter for my Cable Modem & the Modem for Home Phone

You should also no that the 4 upstream level should be within 3db. Plus to low of a tx levels can cause you just as many problems due to being so close to noise floor. Tx45 rx0 is the best place to be. To high of a Rx level can Cause m.e.r problems with the digital signal.

I couldn't see the upstream SNR within the status page
@HPad26 жыл бұрын
Only your ISP can see that.
@scottsmith21736 жыл бұрын
HPad most modems you can see that. It is only measured from plant end but fed back to modem. I can see it on mine with the channel frequency
@HPad26 жыл бұрын
You can see the DOWNSTREAM SNR, not the upstream SNR. There is no modem out there except maybe some old DOCSIS 1.0x modems.
@scottguymon55916 жыл бұрын
wouldnt the cable provider pay for it?
@fauguy236 жыл бұрын
Downstream is best to stay under 10dbmv, 14 is at the max limit and can damage modem over time.
@HPad26 жыл бұрын
+14 is a lot but no where near enough to damage a modem. But still high

To much forward range should be - 10 to +10 return should be 28 to 53 you probably have a bad drop or Outlet this amp is only a band aid

After installing a Motorola BDA-K1-RA active return amp my downstream power was still almost 20db and still disconnected frequently. I added a -6 and a -3 RF attenuator pad to bring the downstream power under 15. No more disconnects.

YOUR CABLE MODEM SHOULD BE THE 1ST DEVICE CONNECTED FROM THE ENTRANCE TO THE HOUSE IF YOU WANT GOOD SIGNALS AND THEN YOU CAN ADD A AMP EITHER BEFORE THE MODEM OR AFTER SEE WHICH WORKS BEST FOR YOU !!!!!!

15/13dB will throw the modem out of spec

Very bad advice. You could kill a whole node. Call your ISP and have them find the real reason why your TX is high. Thanks for having me called out to a noise issue at 3 in the morning.
