Nearly all videogames exploit addictive personalities. How many "gamers" do you know only play games once or twice a week? Or for 30 minutes a day or less? Let's not forget that they also gutted the "VIP" addon that's been a mainstay of Forza. It used to grant a permanent increase in credits earned. This bonus is now contained in mod cards and has a total of 25 uses before the bonus is gone forever. This change wasn't made clear prior to the game's launch and one could argue that the Xbox Store description for the VIP addon was more than a bit weasel-wordy regarding the bonus. The store description has since been updated to clearly describe the limited bonuses but the fact remains that Forza "VIP" was cheapened, and sneakily, in this pursuit of pushing real money microtransactions. VIP was a 'macro' transaction I had been happy to make, now I'm nothing but miffed.

Laggity Buggity Boom Just pointing out. As a long time 2K player, the option to buy VC (their premium crap) has been going on for a LONG time. Going as far back as 2010 i believe. The reason 2K18 gets so much shit is because EVERYTHING costs astronomically ridiculous amounts of VC to unlock. Its kinda simple there are three different boxes including your winnings each one saying what its for. The setting are clear that only driver difficulty will increase pay out. Welcome to the world of legal loopholes! Its technically not gambling even though it definitely is. You pay money for items that you don't know you'll get, but so long as you get what was promised before you bought it, you received rewards equivalent to the purchase price even though the rewards are not valuable to you per se. Gambling also has the chance of making the person lose out. Not gaining anything, but actually losing money. Loot boxes always give you a reward, but again it may not be the one you want. Technically - not gambling. Definitely is though. Best the government can do is pass laws that specify this as exploitative gambling.

Its even worse than that Jim. After having this game for a few days and being a huge fan of the series down the years I can say that since the release of the Xbox one they have stripped almost every good aspect and reason for playing the game. Forza 4 on the 360 was the high point of the franchise. A great racing game with controllable public lobbies, amazing tuning features, online trading and car auctions, bodywork painting and selling of your creations to the community via storefronts that could all be browsed in game. And none of this had anything to do with real money. Now just a few years later we have a very pretty piece of shit with everything removed. No tuning for online racing ( the actual point of the game) no storefronts, no control over the pityfully small amount of racing lobbies and now this gambling shit. This game is a travesty and I really regret buying it. I fucking hate you turn ten. I fucking hate you.

I'm a huge fan of the Forza games, so it pains me a lot to see what they've done with this one. It's the first one in the franchise that I'm not buying. It's just so obviously gimped to push you towards the loot boxes. It's gross. One of the best things about the series has been how you could personalise your experience. They've totally fucked that now to suck money out of you. It stinks. And on that topic, it's not even quite true that the customisation of cars has been left alone. While you can still do it, and it doesn't cost real money, they've made it so you can no longer use customised cars in the career mode, even in races that are supposed to have no restrictions. It's fucking disgusting, with all these changes so blatantly pointing towards a cynical motive. I thought they learned their lesson with the backlash to FM5, but this shit is even worse. I hope so much that Horizon 4 is as fucking gross as this.

Jim, as a lifelong gamer, I have seen the systemic stripping of features that show up again behind paywalls as DLC, and totally agree with your take on the industry. I think it would be super valuable for some of your younger viewers to see a side-by-side comparison of a series of games, or games in similar genres that used to have a feature for free, that now force you to pay for it. e.g. Show the customization options that were free in Forza 2, and then show how the same, or similar features are now trapped behind a paywall. Picking one or two games to represent different genres would be fascinatig (FPS, Action, Racing, Sports etc). Just a thought. Keep up the good work and fighting the good fight. Get well soon!

Content =/= grinding. More content would mean more cars, tracks, and game modes, not just take longer to unlock around the same amount (or less) content then the last game. Mathew Haswell There are certain regulations in the EU, which don't apply in the US. For example, if I would ever get banned from XBL in any EU country, Microsoft would not be allowed to revoke all of my Digital Games and would still be required to let me access them as the EU grants you full ownership for any and all digital goods that you actually buy (certain requirements are in place and it can't be a rental service for example). In the US, you would be fucked, because there is no ownership for digital goods. You get a license for digital goods and they can revoke the license of any digital goods that you purchased and you would lose access and of course the money that you spend on it. As far as ricojes question goes if that is illegal... I'm pretty sure if there was an eager enough attorney, they could do something, because it surely falls under false advertisement. Problem is, there are barely any attorneys that really care about the game industry and it would also need to happen in the EU, because there is absolutely no chance that any sane attorney would go after MS, Sony and other companies in the USA. They would drown in the legal fees faster than you could imagine with that "fair" jurisdiction system in the USA. I think our Jim Sterling could write a book about it. lol

The older games just apply it differently the games are content heavy, even this one is. Plus Forza 7's good point is that you really don't need to spend any actual money for stuff ever. You might not get the CR as quick with the VIP option (figures that's how they'd try and sneak in the new age practices) but considering one commenter didn't even realize such stuff was happening each race, that tells you the game itself is pretty legit.

I remember playing my way through Soul Calibur 2 on the GameCube dozens of times because each time you did it, you unlocked an outfit (and each fighter had 2-3 outfits) or a character. There was even a Campaign mode where you'd play through a number of fights (again, earning weapons and outfits as you fought) in a loose story. Nowadays you'd have to pay a bunch for each character, outfit, weapon and mode as they get carved aside to sell back to you as "DLC". Or of course you can complete the game 4500 times to "unlock" everything because the publishers want to give you the "Option" to spend no extra money after your initial $60 purchase.

I'm not so much interested in regaining what I've lost, but in helping create consumer protections for vulnerable people like me. There should at least be some sort of built-in warning or purchase monitor that triggers a pop-up if it catches players engaging in self-destructive spending habits. Perhaps an easily accessible in-app transaction history? Or display how much you've spent so far every time you try to purchase again? Dude it's worse than you think. The grind is WAY more of a thing in this game compared to FM6. In FM6, every time you level, you get like massive CR payouts. As much as 1,000,000. Sometimes 500,00. etc.You don't get anything close to that in FM7. 60,000 on average when you level up. On top of that, many of my favorite cars are locked behind "collector tiers" forcing me to buy a whole bunch of cars I DON'T want, just to be able to buy a car I DO want. On top of that this is the BUGGIEST and GLITCHIEST Forza EVER. i'm going back to FM6. This games sucks!
