Here is how I make a Jingasa for Iaido demonstrations. Also very suitable for cosplay or costumed parties. I use Birch triplex, glue, (spray)paint, spray putty and cotton. Enjoy. Please show me a picture of your result. Arigato Gozaimasu.

I was just momentarily wondering about these. Ive got this Jingasa I pulled out of a box. Stuff someone in my family picked up in Japan. It's likely a cheap fun replica.

Lovely! Maybe paint it white instead of black, to reflect the sunlight.

Hello ! I want to try this DIY but i have a small question ( And i hope to get an answer cause i plan this to be done for end of june ) : What is the plywood thin ? Because i saw you cut it with a knife ?
@BobWalkerNL
@BobWalkerNL 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. The plywood is 3 mm. The reason I use a knife is for straight edges. This leaves me with no raw edges and a seamless connection. Enjoy making your own.

You could use a handheld (machine) jigsaw, with a fine tooth saw. Or go manual, with a jigsaw bracket.

awesome video! the process is really interesting, do u know how thin the birch is and what kinda wallpaper glue, spry putty you used? really curious i would like to try this myself
@BobWalkerNL

Thank you very much. The plywood is 3 mm. thick. I used glue for glass fiber wallpaper, which is a little thicker and more sticky then the standard one. The spray putty is by Motip I think. I wish you joy in making your Jingasa.

Weren't these also traditionally made out of multiple layers of laquered rice paper? I thought I saw that somewhere.

To my knowledge they were indeed. Hats and helmets were made of paper, wood, metal, leather, cloth and woven reed type material. Mostly reinforced with Urushi.

I know someone already commented this but how would you make a roningasa? Do you think you could make a video on it? I get sunburnt pretty easily so the roningasa seems like it would be great for hikes. Thanks!

How do the straps go on your head? I wanna put that style of atamadai on my nonla rather then having a string that gets blown off by the wind.
@BobWalkerNL
@BobWalkerNL 4 жыл бұрын
To really make sure the pillow and strings are really well fastend, you can drill very small holes, two on each side, and use strong thread to sew the pillow in. Then use a tine little bit of resin to secure the thread and at the same time fill the hole. You could stir a little bit of black pigment through the resin, so you will not or hardly see it. For wearing, I place it around the back of my neck, wrap it around the loops once and then tie it under my chin. The leftover strings gets wrapped around under the chin, up to the cheek, until there is no more left.

How wide are the smallest younger so I’m worried that I may have done too small. My Jingasa diameter is 12 inches. So the radius is six. Maybe too small. I had never done it before.

It's not an easy job. Now that you made the first one, you can improve the next one. I feel about 15" will be good. Enjoy!

What exactly is birch triplex? Is that the same as birch plywood? Also what thickness is it? I can get 1/4" birch plywood easily enough from Home Depot...Also, how did you attach the cushion at the end? Double sided tape?
@BobWalkerNL
@BobWalkerNL 6 жыл бұрын
Plywood indeed. 3mm. I used felcro, since I didn't want to drill holes for metal wires.
