For those wondering why James Lord Pierpont wrote "we got upsot" in Jingle Bells you have to understand that this song was written in 1857 when poetry was how songs were written, they were written poetically, read the entire verse again. A day or two ago I thought I'd take a ride And soon, Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side, The horse was lean and lank Misfortune seemed his lot He got into a drifted bank (IE the sleigh started drifting) And then we got upsot. (The horse crashed the sleigh and the sleigh overturned) Upsot is not a fancy way to say Upset. Upsot means to tip over or overturn.

Not really a Christmas song, this is an ancestor of the whole American popular music genre of songs about cars, car racing, and cruising for girls. The lyrics describe the vehicle, racing, crashing, and picking up girls, just like Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys, and everybody else. There's good description of the social scene around sleigh riding in Laura Ingles Wilder's "These Happy Golden Years" from the Little House in the Big Woods series. I think your video and rendition are first rate, especially showing the sheet music. Thanks!

I think the reason people are liking this more again is because its different to what we're familiar with and sounds refreshing to the ear. It is interesting that this is from 1857 though, that's just wild. Nearly 200 years old haha
@Peter_1986 Жыл бұрын
It is more than that: this version has a more varied melody, and it also combines major and minor chords, and those qualities tend to make a song more interesting and exciting.
@MKIVWWI8 жыл бұрын
Excellent original version. Per Wikipedia: "The original 1857 "Jingle Bells" had a slightly different chorus featuring a more classical-style melody. The "I V vi iii IV I V I" chord progression is a common theme in classical music; except for the final two chord changes, the melody as originally written follows the same chord progression as Pachelbel's Canon; the tune would later become more closely associated with another Christmas song, “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas,” which appeared about twenty years after "Jingle Bells"." When I first heard the original version, I heard an element of "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas". After reading this Wikipedia article, I can also hear an element of Pachelbel's Canon in D, as well! Sort of odd that a song that does not mention Christmas, in either religious or secular terms, should become the song most associated with Christmas. Since growing up in the 1960s, I've heard "Jingle Bells" more than any other Christmas song (also, of course, thanks to it's inclusion in many hundreds of commercials over the decades!). But in any given Xmas season, whether you're even aware of it, you'll hear "Jingle Bells" more than any other, including "White Christmas". Probably because it makes such perfect bouncy 'background music' for commercials!
@eyeball2266 жыл бұрын
That's interesting, because what I'm hearing here is I V vi III IV I V I. Note the major III chord as opposed to the minor iii chord.
@johnrottler40003 жыл бұрын
@@eyeball226 Yeah but still you could consider it as a variation of Pachabel’s Canon as it’s still very similar and definitely influenced by it

Hi, Tom. This is absolutely delightful! The original chorus is so refreshing, rather like the original chorus of "My Western Home." Thanks for showing the sheet music. I can sing along on the chorus, which is grand fun! I'm fascinated that the tenor line in the chorus uses a most unusual C clef on the third space. This is a very rare way to note an octave clef. Fascinating that Pierpont uses it in 1857, assuming the sheet music you show is the original or close to it. No doubt a good topic for a musicology paper! 😉
