Hi Chris! Thank you for this globally available preview on Jinhao DADAO 9019. There was only one other Chinese video without translation before. I've been using it for a few days and it certainly marks a new frontier in the world of fountain pens. It must be said that the larger converter screws into the section and on the opposite side ends between the internal fins of the pen body. The whole thing is very stable and functional. I understand that it is the first time that Jinhao has followed its brand with a word DADAO as well as a number. Until now they have always been at most a letter and a number. The name DADAO 9019 hides a reference to the X159 ... a fascinating enigma as a sign of continuity ...

Thanks, Chris, for pointing out the design improvements on this Jinhao model. I'm impressed by the threads that engage the converter and that the converter itself is bigger than its brothers. When the original black metal Jinhao 159 came out it irked me that so large a pen had the same itty-bitty ink capacity as smaller pen models. The metal collar on the converter is a good feature, too. I wonder if the fins inside the cap and barrel improve stability of the plastic. It would, over production in the millions, use a measurable amount of material, and it's not like the Chinese engineers to waste material. Your thoughts?
@chrisrap52 Жыл бұрын
The 992 had cracking issues at end of barrel, these ribs would help that & as I say in video the ribs secure the converter. They do double duty.
@steveconquest6684 Жыл бұрын
A definite contender for pen of the year. The converter and the nib are spectacular although I did have to floss the tines to get my clear and black 9019s to write as true mediums. I will be ordering the medium nib pack so I can grind them to cursive italics and stubs.

Perhaps Jinhao has been looking at the reviews of the X159. People have been wanting a piston filler for this pen, but Jinhao doesn't make such an animal. Coming out with an enlarged converter is a definite step in the right direction. If this converter had come out with the X159, I would not have Frankenpen it to become an eyedropper, though I am impressed with the resultant capacity (over 3.5 ml). I wonder if you can get the converter separately?

I've been waiting for someone to review this. I've had mine for a week (clear, medium nib) and want to take it apart in hopes of troubleshooting it, but I didn't want to break anything. I love the look of the pen. It gets an A+ from me in that department. But I have to say that I'm disappointed in the writing experience. I love Jinhaos. I know they can be fantastic writers. This one (and my x159) just isn't one of them. I'm hoping that changes over time because it's a really gorgeous pen. I do have small hands, so that may be part of it. But I have to press HARD to get consistent ink flow for more than one letter at a time. That's one of the things I'm trying to avoid with fountain pens. My x159 is exactly the same. Maybe it's the bigger nibs and my small hands? (The 82s and 599s are fantastic writers for me.)
@chrisrap52 Жыл бұрын
Flush out nib/feed? Micromesh? Floss the nib? Use well-lubricated ink? These nibs do require some pressure to write consistently. Can be resolved a bit, but from my experience, will not write well with little pressure. The smaller No. 5 nibs, as you know, write differently.
@WalkawayyyRenee Жыл бұрын
I am enjoying mine very much, although because of the way I tend to hold my pen, I have to be careful not to let my hold on it be too low, or I get on the feed and wind up with a lot of mess. It makes a pretty sound when I cross my t’s. ❤

I have a few X159s, and while the 9019 offers some minor improvements (the converter being chief among them), there is no qualitative change that is so compelling that I would want to buy one. However, as I've said in the past, if Jinhao beefed up the X159 and improved the quality of the plastics, added a piston filling system, and kept the price under $30, then it would be an excellent pen. It is still a good pen, with or without the improvements, and well worth the price. Thanks for the review and your insights into the 9019.
@chrisrap52 Жыл бұрын
The quality of X159 plastic is as good or better than any injection molded pen. What do you want improved?
@sailcat9 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisrap52 I think that, if the X159 is a bit heavier, it would be an improvement in its feel and presentation. My main complaint about this pen, and I have seen the same comment from reviewers on other sites, it the X159 seems doesn't seem very solid. Not quite flimsy but still insubstantial. Of course, if Jinhao beefed up the pen the price would go up, but in my extremely humble opinion, it wouldn't increase enough that it would be significant and the pen would feel even more like a Mont Blanc (or a Sailor, Pilot, etc) and that would be a good thing. Add a piston-filling system or a vac-filling setup to such a pen and one would have something that would be well worth thirty dollars, more or less. Your mileage may vary, though.
@chrisrap52 Жыл бұрын
I believe that at 28 gm the X159 is not a light pen. The MB 149 is 32 gm not that much more. Some expected a large pen to weigh more. Others have chimed in creating a perception. They don't have an MB 149 for comparison. I don't feel the X159 is insubstantial. Pen feels good in my hand. Most high end pens weigh around 30 gm as the X159 does. It is lighter than the initial metal 159 which many feel is too heavy. What does one expect from a $6 pen! The Majohn 630 I'm reviewing is a big piston fill pen and is over $30, 5x the X159. We have so many pen choices.
@sailcat9 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisrap52 Well, we all have our perceptions but, with all due respect, the pen feels less substantial than some other pens but weight isn't the only relevant factor. The engineering, manufacturing processes, and, yes, the quality of the plastics being used all come together to create a pen that provides an impression of quality. The X159 is a lot of pen for the price but it could be better. If you feel differently, I understand.
