Jinhao x159 | Sometimes Cheap Is All You Need...

This pen (I have the same colour in ) is so underrated. The nib is not unlike my Hongdina/Asvine nibs so it is plenty big enough. It is an excellent writer, I can leave it for weeks, pick it up and it writes and was under $10. I would give it 4.9/5, there is (almost) nothing I can fault. For me at least, it is the perfect size and just works. Nope it's not a Mont Blanc 149, but that's not the point. As a daily writer it is (almost) perfect. With the bigger Cartridge Converter of the 9019, it would be incrementally better, and I'd probably give it the 5/5. If you are concerned about cheap Chinese fountain pens, give the X159 a go, what have you got to lose, and it just might surprise you.

The Jinhao x159 lacks the wonderful huge threaded cartridge converter of their x9019, but its grip is significantly less girthy. That makes it more comfortable in my hand. Replacement Jinhao #8 nibs fitting the x159 and the 9019 are inexpensive and readily available, for example on Amazon, so if your nib is defective or you want an EF, F or M replacement in whatever metal color, you have that option. The pen is reliable, well-sealed from drying out, well-balanced and has a reasonable heft. For the price especially, this is a great writing or drawing pen. You can take it along and not worry about the cost of loss.

Thanks for a concise yet informative review. I got an X159 (and have a 159, but no Sailors 😉). I liked the big nib, but was underwhelmed that Fine was the only option. My lad jumped onto my bed one day, though, and damaged the cap, so it's no longer airtight. As soon as Medium or Broad nib versions become available, I'll get another. 😀

I bought two of these at first thinking that one of these nibs would not work straight out of the box. They were both bad nibs until I worked some magic to get them writing, but none of them worked to my liking. I bought a third one which works once inked. Still, the total i paid for all three is less than what I paid for my 149. 🤷‍♂️

The color to me is chocolate, nothing close to red. The one I received did not write but my Amazon return was super easy!

I suspect a dig at the fact people have a go at Jinhao for copying the Montblanc design cues, but not Sailor, Platinum etc...

Thank you Archivist17 for getting that subtle jab. I wanted a go at the fact that Montblanc isn’t the only one have a design heavily (understatement) borrowed here. For a cheap throwaway pen though, I’ll allow it. Sometimes you just don’t want to pay the Montblanc entry price.

Exactly what kind of cartridge converter is it? Is it a standard international or 2.3mm bore? Is it like the one that comes with the jinhao 599 'safari homage/clone'? Thanks

The cartridge converter is the international standard. I don't like using converters, I'm a cartridge guy, and the standard worked just fine.
