Jinhao X750 Black Shimmering Sands fountain pen review.
A while ago I reviewed the Pelikan M205 Moonstone special edition fountain pen - That pen is "affordable" but may be too expensive for some, so here is an alternative, cheap fountain pen for my viewers!
The Jinhao X750 is a fountain pen that I reviewed very early on in my Fountain Pen Journey, but I needed an interesting EDC pen for work and decided to dig this pen out of storage (from its initial purchase in 2017).
The Jinhao X750 Black Shimmering Sands is a gorgeous(?) cheap fountain pen with a metal body which has a black coating filled with multicolour glitter/sparkle. It is not as subtle as the Pelikan M205 Moonstone fountain pen, but still doesn't scream out too much (like the BENU fountain pens do).
For the price, it's difficult to ignore such a good value fountain pen. Yes, it's another long-running model from Chinese pen manufacturer Jinhao, but it is a good pen and the No. 6 nib (medium) is easily swappable. It even comes with a converter!
The Jinhao X750 Black Shimmering Sands is a welcome change to the typical colours of the metal Jinhao fountain pens. It would be nice to see Jinhao make some new models akin to the X750, X450, etc. or release these popular, cheap fountain pens in some new colours.

I've not gotten any Jinhao pens I didn't like. Basically, it looks like they have a model for almost anyone. 😁 I like the X750. Enough weight to be comfortable for me for longer writing. I have purchased around 30 Jinhao pens in the last year or so, and I think that the quality control has really improved. I've had none of the issues that the older Jinhao pens had the reputation for. I'm currently using 2 of them, an X250 and a 997, along with a few other pens (8 total, one vintage Sheaffer Fineline, the rest Chinese.) I will say that I've had issues with them drying out. Of course, I've had that for even some "name brand" vintage pens that you'd not expect that from, as well. When one gets used just to address envelopes, it does tend to be that one, but the Jinhao 997 I currently have a water resistant ink for envelopes in hasn't had any problems. Yet. Nice to see some love being given to a Chinese pen once in awhile. There's naysayers that look at them all as "copies" and "fakes," when the Chinese aren't really doing anything different from what other pen manufacturers through the years have done. (There's even a 1970s Aurora that looks suspiciously like the Osmiroid 75 or 65. And don't forget the many hooded nibs trying to ride the coattails of the success of the Parker 51.) Many designs have been copied, and by some big names that just don't get mentioned. Sheaffer wanted something that works like a Conklin Crescent filler, so they made the lever filler. Almost all fountain pens from the 1920s and 30s were flattops, but only the Chinese pens tend to be "Duofold knockoffs." In spite of many flattop pens from other companies that are similar. I've seen a Kaigelu 316 from 2021 called a Duofold copy. Looks more like maybe a Sheaffer flattop or even a Conklin, instead of a Duofold, IMO. 😁 Still have not seen any Wahl-Eversharp Skyliner copies, unless you count the current version. 😁 Only so many ways to make a pen, and I really think that the Jinhao X750 really doesn't look like a copy of anything. Solid, good writer, clean, classic design. I'd get another one. 😉

I totally agree! Most fountain pens are in some way a copy of another model (with some exceptions like the Venvestas D'art...) I wish that Jinhao were a bit more prolific with their colour and model production because they really offer something for everyone - and at a price lower than most other Chinese manufacturers. Their quality is good and thankfully they often come with medium nibs!

@@FountainPenJourney At least with the Century, they have a great selection of acrylics. And, yes. Very Duofold inspired. The black finials put it in that category. And the first one they came out with looked suspiciously like a "Big Red" vintage Duofold, just not as tapered on the blind cap. I'd bet that the difference between the Waterman's 12 eyedropper filler from around WWI looks like almost every other eyedropper filler of the period. I know that my 1912 Mabie Todd Swan C2 looks like it. Just a screw cap instead of the slip cap used on early pens. Was a "safety pen" because of this (no retractable nib.)

I love Jinhaos 💘! X750 is very nice but I tend to like x450, 159 and 100 centennial more. Older jinhao nibs where softer and thicker, almost broad but many of them were unpleasant to write with. Newer jinhao nibs are as good as any western steel nib, very smooth. I used to replace their nibs with Bock or Jowo nibs but now there is no reason to do so. Thanks for the nice review 👍

Thanks for your comment and it's good to hear that the newer Jinhao nibs are an improvement negating the need to upgrade them!

Many thanks for this, Rob. I have four of these plus others in the prefix X range. ALL of them wrote perfectly straight out of the box. The X750 is particularly good, with a Jinhao nib which delivers in every sense of the word! Cheap price wise … but not cheap in any other way. Highly recommend this as a starter pen. Currently £8.99 inc postage.

Though the Jinhao FPs were not my very first pens, they did come fairly early in my pen collecting. I put a Goulet 1.1 stub on my Jinhao X750s. I use the medium nibs which come with the Jinhao X450. I tend to be partial to the X750s over the X450s. Most of my Jinhao X750s were purchased for $2.98-$3.98. When I consider the cost, I am not expecting to have the same quality of a $50 and up pen. I enjoy it for what it has to offer, and it has been dependable, good ink flow using the Black n' Red Notebooks (quality paper), and fitting for whatever situation I require at the moment. When I want bling or status, I pull out one of my other pens. Have used the X750 and X450 to encourage others to write with a fountain pen. Learned to tweak a nib using the Jinhao nibs. Nice pen to use at school or job. If it comes up missing in action, it will not leave you at a financial loss. Also like the looks of my Black Shimmering Sands with the Goulet 1.1 stub. My oldest X750 is now about 13 yrs old, and it is still looking good and a winner. Pelikan M205 - $115-$215 US Pelikan M205 Moonstone: $188.42 (US)

Hi Rob! Thank you for your elegant and thorough review of the Jinhao X750. I have this fountain pen model and other various models of the X750 series. Really very emblematic fountain pens: cheap, well balanced, with high performance nibs. Pleasant models, which lend themselves well to collections and use with many colors. Also known and appreciated is the ink you presented, very interesting: this is also economical, valid, pleasant.

Hi Rob. Yes the X750 is a good starter pen and many people upgrade the nib, as you know. I have three of them (I think) but not the Shimmering Sands model. Mine are the Lava Red, Black High Gloss and a rather nice Cream coloured version. I like the Shimmering Sands as well but when do you stop adding new colours? I think three X750's are enough for me!

I agree - when I first started collecting Jinhao fountain pens I wanted to buy every model in every colour, but soon realised that maybe this wasn't such a good idea. But then again, it would be nice to have every colour if it's a pen that you like..!

@@FountainPenJourney : When I was buying the X750s they were costing me from $2.98-$3.98. I had purchased 9 of them, I would have only spent $27-32. Let's just say I got my money's worth.

I have exactly this model as my most recent purchase (albeit a few months ago now). I bought it partly as a test pen for different styles of nib, and for use with fancy inks. I bought Diamine Night Sky just to go with the sparkle theme. All in all, I can't fault it. Works reliably, is very smooth, has a pop cap (a plus in my book, though I know it's a contentious issue), nice size, subtly fun, yet good for work. Superb!

As someone- unlike the majority of reviewers- who was schooled in the 1950's in what, for some reason is now called "cursive" writing, the last thing I want is a hefty pen. (My everyday pens are Parker 61 and Waterman CF). In recent years I, like many I guess, have been seduced by Chinese Pens. At first because they are soooo cheap. But once you get over that, most of them are as good as anything else, at any price. I have many Jinhao pens- 51A, 997, 35, X750, X450 etc etc. (For me the X450/X750 are far too heavy) What I understand they are good for though, given they have a No6 nib, is that you can change the nib for something like a Zebra G- if that's your thing. But for me, when it comes to Jinhao pens for me it's the super cheap 992. They are as good as anything on the market if it's a comfortable pen for cursive writing is what you want.
