Love your posts, bro. I too am a musician of 40+ years with the guitar actually being my forte. To answer your question that you were trying to ask, effects are a big part of the guitar repertoire when you move into different genre. To answer your question, yes, you can literally layer multiple effects on top of each other and what is generally referred to as an affect loop or a direct chain between the guitar and the amp. The sequence of these various effects can in essence create tones based on your desire and sometimes tones that you didn’t even know existed by adding different types of effects together. One starts with a clean tone between your fingers and the amp and the between those you can orchestrate a complete sound based on effects. Some guitarists will go so far as to add as many as 3+ different types of distortion with each stage, giving a different degree of compression, crunch and drive that can accommodate whatever the desired affect is, which could be from slightly driven blues to over the top deathcore.

Sound design is very much a thing in Metal... well in any genre with electric guitars, really. You can do a LOT of things with guitars in sound design Apparently within Slavic culture the Green Serpent refers to alcohol the Green Wine (Green cause it's made from Green Grapes), and with that, this to me at least, seems a representation of the destructive nature of alcoholism.
