The most popular image associated with kata is that of a karate practitioner performing a series of punches and kicks in the air. The kata are executed as a specified series of approximately 20 to 70 moves, generally with stepping and turning, while attempting to maintain perfect form. There are perhaps 100 kata across the various forms of karate, each with many minor variations. The number of moves in a kata may be referred to in the name of the kata, eg. Gojushiho, which means "54 steps." The number of moves may also have links with Buddhist spirituality. The number 108 is significant in Buddhism, and kata with 54, 36, or 27 moves (divisors of 108) are common. The practitioner is generally counselled to visualize the enemy attacks, and his or her responses, as actually occurring, and karateka are often told to "read" a kata, to explain the imagined events.
In teaching the open handed kata, most styles of Karate start with a series of three, or sometimes two, very simple kata called blocking forms before advancing to five basic kata named Pinan in some systems and Heian in others. By working through this series (in order: Shodan, Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan (except in Wado Ryu Karate, where Shodan and Nidan are reversed)) the practitioner learns all the basic stances and techniques before moving on to more advanced kata. Traditionally, kata are taught in stages. Previously learned kata are returned to in order to show more advanced techniques or ways of doing things, as beginners do not have the same knowledge and experience that practitioners further up the ranks have. It is not uncommon in some styles for students testing for Shodan (first rank black belt) to have to repeat every kata they have learned from the first belt, but at a "black belt" level, for example, with better technique, power, amongst others. This system is often used for the lower grades as well. The student will perform one new kata and one or two previous ones, to demonstrate how much they have progressed and how quickly they can learn new things.

The literal meaning of the work Shodan (1st Dan) is First Step. This is where you are considered proficient in the basics and can now proceed to really learning karate. It is a common misconception that attaining the level of black belt means that you know and understand that martial art, whereas in reality it is only the beginning. After nearly 30 years training I find that I have more to learn than I have already taken in, which is the great thing about martial arts; one never stops learning.

Been doing Shotokan since 1984. I knew all the kata’s to Empi, Unsu,Kangkudai Basaidai,Jion. And my 2nd Dan Kata Gangaku. Just had my right knee replaced. After 10 years of pain. I’m pain free now. At least the knee. Now due to over compensation my left leg is very weak. And list lots of upward flexibility. Cant bring my left knee to my chest as I can my right. So it’s a whole new learning process. Some Kata I just stop doing, because I just suffered the next day. And still had to work painting homes. In my business. And painting a home can be like doing Aikido. 8 hours a day. Up and down,up and down, up and down. Reach. M a master with a paint poke. ( Jo Staff). Long Pole. 😂😂. But I started training Shotokan n 84 because of it powerful foundational concept. And building of power and energy. And how it’s a very left/ right training. I’m very happy to be doing Kata again and kihon. Just basic technique is fun again. I had stopped kicking due to weak knee. And focus more on upper body strikes. Now get back to combining them again. OUS.

All you karate guys debate about this is old kata you never learn kata, do kata 1000 times and so on.What happened to the spirit that you do the kata in technique comes second. It will take your entire life to learn karate, there is no limit. Practicing a kata exactly is one thing, engaging in a real fight is another. Karate-do begins with courtesy and ends with rei.Try to not forget the precepts of karate.

I became Shodan when I was 10 started when I was 6 and this kata is very dear to my heart as I performed it in front of my family and friends for my black belt exam. Consider reading books by Gichin Funakochi as this gentleman invented Shotokan karate and published the first books about this karate style Later Mas Oyama invented well known brutal style of karate Kyokushin, and he spent 3 years meditating and training in the mountains by himself If you want to awaken your warrior spirit Shotokan is the style for you as it builds character and humility If you really want to hurt someone Kyokushin is style for you

He was world champion 2 years in a row...no one would argue with him. I personally think the changes he made improved the kata.,

A little late, but I'd like to share my experience since as a Blue belt I was also very recently taught this Kata, but only because our dojo has a limited number of teachers, so blue belts train along with brown belts. This makes sense, considering that Katas like Bassai Dai are required for both exams (Brown belt and Black belt) but Jion is only performed in the Black belt exam, along with Kanku Dai.

I am currently on 3rd kyu (1st brown belt) in Wado Ryu, (I am 11 years old), and it's funny how Jion actually is easy. It's a bit hard to remember, but I learnt the structure in a half hour. But this was performed pretty good!

***** Yes, but this is surprisingly easy! Like... In Rohai (don't know how it is spelled), you need the passion and stuff... But this was just surprising me how easy it was... :P

The belt does not make a good karateka, anyone can memorize a kata but you have to use speed, power, and show spirit while maintaining proper form.

Ryan Rampersaud I know! But as I think I mentioned, the structure is way easier than it looks like. But even Kionkata is hard, if you have to show the true spirit. One point to you!

I suppose it is not my place to question him - for I am only a brown belt - but I am confused on why he didn't bow. It's formal and respectful
@Draconis555

+Shielia Gaming You don't bow before performing every single kata. Why should You? Bow is just a gesture of respect for partner or sensei. Sometimes You bow before particular parts of training, but not always. It's like saing 'hello' every 50 times a day when You pass the same person in the corridor. It may be polite, but c'mon there are borders. In many schools You also don't stand in musubi dachi while announcing kata. Moreover 'original', Okinawa karate is less formal. Japanese wanted sort of physical education for schools, with all these formal parts, no judo-style techniques and so on. That's why we have so many strange movements in kata, no grappling and ground-fighting... and formalities:)

His performance of this kata was awesome! If I could spot one imperfection is that he didn't end where he started, but overall it was outstanding(I can't even get close to this) ;)
