Concerning Merab's question to Umar about his nationality, here's a little historical and geopolitical context: Merab (Georgia), Arman (Armenia), Umar (Dagestan) all come from three (formerly independent) countries that where forcefully incorporated into communist Soviet Union to become Soviet republics. They all have completely different ethnic, language, culture, and history from Slavic Russia. Georgia and Armenia got independent again directly after the collapse of the Soviet Union while still holding somewhat "friendly" relationships to the new-founded Russian Federation (with Georgian people rather wanting to become at member of the European Union, but a Russian-friendly president who wants to keep ties with Russia; and Armenia slowly turning its back on Russia after Azerbaijan, another former Soviet Republic, invading Armenia and Russia not holding the promise of their military treaty equivalent to NATO of protecting Armenia from that invasion). Chechnya (where Khamzat Chimaev is from), another country that was forced into the Soviet Union tried to become independent a bit later and their capital got completely bombed to the ground by Russia, and Russian friendly dictator Khadirov was installed as Chechnya's president to make sure it stays as a republic within the Russian Federation. Now, Dagestan, while also ethnically, linguistically, culturally, and historically very different from Russia, but within itself socially very fragmented with different people and several different languages, seeing how Chechnya was completely destroyed during their fight for independance, didn't dare to declare independance and accepted to stay as Russian republic, even though Dagestani are very different people than ethnic Russians. Russian authorities have a very watchfull eye on anything that could be seen as separatist and will punish pretty harshly anyone who publicly says something about independance, hence all Dagestani fighters are wary not to say anything that could allude to Dagestan being an independant country, and instead will officially represent the Russian Federation. To Anglo-Americans, it's a bit like the history between Ireland and England/the United Kingdom. England is like Russia, the UK like the Russian Federation, the Republic of Ireland like Georgia and Armenia, and Northern Ireland like Dagestan and Chechnya. Or for Weasel (who, if I remember correctly is originally Albanian), it's a bit like the situation in former Yugoslavia, which broke apart into the different original countries Croatia, Slovenia (Catholic Christian Slavs), Serbia, Montenegro (Orthodox Christian Slavs), Bosnia (Muslim), and Albania + Kosovo (non-Slavs).

They have strong national identities and cultures that set them apart from russia, but sizeable minorities of citizens who see themselves as Russian. The conflict in Chechnya and dagestan was more decisive and smaller scale but still involved over 10k casualties. Considering that russia is currently trying to strongarm georgia into giving up parts of its territory, merab probably has animosity towards russians. Whats more, khabib's father has ties to ramzan kadyrov, who defected from the chechen independence movement during the war and is now both in putins inner circle and the russian-appointed head of the chechen republic. Now, kadyrov is terrifying. It is likely that Abdulmanap's connections to kadyrov were coercive to some degree. I dont know enough about the details there to comment further. But merab likely sees umar and his family the same way he presumably sees Russian sympathizers living in georgia-- as undermining and "selling out" a proud nation to an expansionist dictator. It’s not that Umar hasn’t trained hard since he was a kid. It’s the fact that he is the literal cousin of one of the greatest ever, and was also trained by the late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Being raised so closely to such elite company allowed him to grow into the fighter he is today, while also staying in Dagestan (granted Umar is hypocritical for his criticism of Merab, he also trains partly in America, so did Khabib under AKA). Georgia doesn’t have a coach or system that is comparable to what Umar got under Abdulmanap and Khabib. Of course Merab had to leave to find a better gym and coach.

Armenia had friendly relations with Russia till recently when; due to the war with Ukraine; Azerbaijan managed to take contested territory they wanted. Before that Russia was the guarantor in chief. Dagestan was conquered from Persia in 1814 and resisted Russia till Putin who basically bought their leaders in early 2000s So there is slight difference.

Weasle Dagestanis are Russian but they are not ethnically Russian. They were subjugated by the Russian Empire. Merab and Arman are Caucasian like Umar and Islam, but their countries became independent of Russian rule. I watched a KZbin short of a man asking Circassian men (Caucasian muslims like Dagestanis) if they would marry a Russian woman. And all of them said no because their cultures are different. So the nationality is the same but the ethnicity is different. There have even been wars between Russian and Chechnya and Georgia for independence in recent times. That’s what Merab means about asking if Umar is Dagestani or Russian.
