Mithun came into the industry a couple of years earlier than Sanjay Dutt and established himself as a more versatile and convincing action/dance hero. Sanjay Dutt on the other hand, back in the 80s was a romantic hero. Even in movies they worked together, like Ilaka, Jeete Hai Shaan Se etc, Mithun got the meatier roles as he was a bigger star...probably the biggest and almost a threat to Amitabh Bachchan. By the early 90s the tables turned. Sanjay Dutt became massively popular as an Action hero through Sadak. Then came a lot of movies which kept making Sanjay Dutt bigger in physical size as well as stature. By the mid 90s the three Khans arrived and brought back romance. By this time, Mithun's career was going downward. Sanjay Dutt, Sunny Deol and Jackie Shroff were still going strong as Action Heroes. Romantic movies were dominated by the Khans. And newer Action heroes like Ajay Devgan, Sunil Shetty and Akshay Kumar had also arrived. Not as big as Sanjay, Sunny or Jackie in the mid 90s, but they had their own Martial Arts genres. It was a fiercely competitive scenario in the Action domain. And the 3 Khans had gone far ahead in the romance domain. By early 2000s, Hrithik arrived with a bang. I have witnessed all this stardom as I am 1980 born and we witnessed the Single screen theatres and the one line punchers of the heroes. I was a HUGE HUGE Sanjay Dutt fan, though I loved Mithun Chakraborty too.
