I agree with @@wayward-saint. Great dowel making jigs! I bet more would find it if the title contained "dowel making" or "dowels". Even the first jig seems better than some store bought jigs, and it's dead simple to make.

Exactly my topic! To put aluminum tubes together without play, I needed round pieces of wood with the right diameter, which you can't buy. Precise calibration to a few tenths of a millimeter accuracy over a length of several centimeters is more difficult than you might think. You need a device that is as infinitely adjustable as possible with good guidance in front of and behind the cutting position. Not easy to produce even on a lathe or woodturning bench. The suggestions shown are good approaches. Thank you very much!

What is the name of the tool used to hold the square rod at 10:40? I've looked for something like that, but can't find anything. Thanks.
@hollt6934 ай бұрын
It's a homemade jig using a small section of what looks to be a 2020 profile aluminum extrusion, along with some flat brackets and wing nuts. I don't know if he has a video on how to build the jig, but I think there might be better/safer ways to accomplish the same thing. I especially liked his use of a socket to turn a piece of square stock. Many sockets have a 12-pointed star shape formed by overlapping two hexagons at 90 degrees to one another, which is useful in this case because it means you can hold a piece of square stock with one, since 12 is divisible by 4. It might not be as secure as the aforementioned jig, but it's fine for this application.
@TheJonHeese4 ай бұрын
@@hollt693Of course, I should have guessed that this was a homemade jig… 🤦♂️ Thanks.
@hollt6934 ай бұрын
@@TheJonHeese No worries! I wondered what it was myself, but I wouldn't've looked any closer if not for your question, so I'm grateful! If you're interested in replicating it, you can play the video at 0.25x speed from your timestamp, and there's a single frame around 10:42 with a clear (no motion blur) view of the jig.

taking a quick look at Lowe's - proberly not the best source but alas - it mostly poplar. Know that you can source them in other woods that's more expensive - but lets say you want camphor laurel wood round stock, in 13 mm for some reason then you use one these jigs(proberly the first router one). Or any size with a standard drill size or like 33/64 - looks can be factor for your project but you are not wrong. Are some of them over engineered af? Yes but its kinda what we are here for :D
