It's cool to see Chilla's arts move out of the ps1 style and into a more realistic one, although i do really like the ps1 style, its still nice to see new stuff.

Chillas art have really improved with this game, for a while their quality has been slipping because of their tendency to add multiple endings and making longer games, it’s good to see them go back to their more detailed, tense roots

I'm still trying to work out everything that's going on in this game but, with the Christian imagery and the room you eventually find under the house, I'm not entirely sure here but it makes me think of a certain time in Japanese history. About the time that they decided to close themselves off from the rest of the world, they outlawed Christianity. Like, you could be put to death for practicing it. So a lot of Japanese, which became known as the Hidden Christians, often would hide in caves and the like to practice their religion. Now with the room hidden like it was, and the statues and the painting down there, it made me think maybe that's what the room originally was. The house itself is a traditional one, and could be fairly old and land itself in that time period. Now again, that's just something that came to mind when you made your way down there, and I'm not sure exactly how that would play into what's going on in the game, just something I noticed. Maybe someone else could figure out how that fits in the story that understands more about the story than I do at the moment. Also the stairwell up that's sealed off, wonder if that leads to the hole he's dropping sacrifices down?
@chairmanwario
@chairmanwario 8 ай бұрын
That idea of historical spaces repurposed for unsavory purposes kind of reminds of a certain creepypasta I read, which I think was called "Holes." The main character lived in the Southern USA in a pre-Civil War house that still had hidden rooms leftover from the Underground Railroad. A stalker lived in the hidden rooms and used them to spy on the main character without him knowing for years.

Many Asian cultures allow Christianity to exist alongside their local religions or even mixes them. Hope that helps explain some of what you were seeing in the game.
@surroundgatari
@surroundgatari 8 ай бұрын
Japanese religious imagery is usually an insane salad of a lot more non-local stuff than just Christianity. you have the old japanese folk religion, but they've imported imagery from Buddhism, Hinduism, Daoism, Chinese Folk Tradition, and of course Christianity like you said. they all have various degrees of cultural admixture over hundreds upon hundreds of years (hundreds of years goes for Christianity too, Portuguese and Dutch were preaching a long, long time ago) although I wanna point out for clarity that Christians are a pretty small minority over there much like in (South) Korea, with the influence of the religious imagery spreading far wider than the faith itself

Japan has many religions as far as i am aware. I worked there once on a smaller project with my wife for two weeks and she is mongolian/tibetan buddhist and they had a temple there in town. And also a christain church, a small mosque and some other shrines. The japanese locals were also interested in us talking in German and Russian, for some reason they were obsessed with how these (and perhaps other) languages sound, even if they didn't understand what we were saying. They seem to mix random German words into their pop-culture, but i don't know much about that.

@@kingkorva5720 I don't know much about AE, because i took my english classes in the UK, because it's very close to where i live. East asian countries do also have fans of England, mostly because of Harry Potter and romantisation of british culture. There were some advertisements and products in Japan, where they replaced random words with english and latin letters, but didn't know it was AE specifically. For the differences between AE and BE, i only know that instead of ou, the americans use an o in some words (colour, color).

The kanji in the title 自撮 translates to "self-photography" (aka selfie). It's a play on words because as is mentioned before 自殺, which is pronounced the same as 自撮, means "self-deletion".

Chilla's Art games are vague indeed. You really don't know what to expect. Even if you understand the game's name, it's ambiguous. "Jisatsu" either means "self-photo"/selfie (which's what the kanji suggests) or "self-k!ll"/suic!de. And the possible first monster encounter in the game is a talking toilet...that demands sacrifices??

Japanese Christians do exist, though they are a very small minority of practicioners in comparison to the indigenous Shinto and the long-standing native form of Buddhism. As with any sort of imported religion and its accompanying spiritual practices, Japan's Christianity is heavily interwoven with pre-existing beliefs and practices. Don't know the granular details of its practices myself, but Christianity's *history* in Japan since its introduction by the Portuguese in the mid-16th Century is absolutely fascinating, especially as it had been, for the longest time, a persecuted practice. To this day, Christianity is still seen by some Japanese non-Christians as a kind of "colonialist's" religion, while many others simply accept it, or even see it as an exotic foreign religion, the latter is why Christianity and Christian imagery in Japanese entertainment media is so abused or misused, e.g. _Neon Genesis Evangelion_

strange, I googled what Jisatsu meant, and apparently it means "superslide/sudoku/close-the-game" (inuendo in case my comment gets flagged or removed), but I googled the Japanese characters next to it and it came up with the definition of a selfie... odd. Maybe its just something weird with Google, or Jisatsu has numerous meanings like how the number four in Japanese also means death. Idk that's likely a stretch and probably inaccurate, but either way the name works

Personally I didn't enjoy the FOV, smoothing, and flashlight settings which made it feel artificially claustrophobic.
