The Kimura is one of the most powerful Grips/submissions in all of Jiu Jitsu. Named respectfully after Masahiko Kimura, a world-renowned Judoka who used the move to defeat the legendary Helio Gracie in their famous bought. The Kimura is an integral part of Jiu Jitsu and an amazing tool to use for control or to gain submission from your opponent. The variation we are looking at today is used from the guard as a way of gaining control of our opponent by isolating one arm and positioning ourselves in a manner that allows for a continuation of our attack while protecting from any serious counter attacks.
In this variation we start from the closed guard and try to get our opponents hands to the floor while gaining wrist control over the arm you are going to attack. The guard player will open their guard, plant their feet, scoot their butts back while sitting up and forward weaving their own arm over the opponent’s shoulder, under the arm pit and down to their own wrist already in control of the wrist of the arm under attack. Once the hands are locked with a thumbless grip they will hug the arm to their chest, lift the hand and begin to bring the opponent with them as they lay to their back. Using their far leg to block any attempts to escape the legs the attacker will now plat the foot on their near side and begin to scoot out and adjust their angle of attack while simultaneously breaking down their opponent's posture. Once the opponent is broken down the legs are locked, and the hand is rotated towards the back of the opponent's head until submission occurs. Failure to signal defeat can result in broken bones and torn ligaments.
