"Lata Mangeshkar sang this song in a single session. Still, the final version was not right. Music director A.R. Rahman spent another 10 days on the song. Taking his time to compose the instrumentation is Rahman's usual style. "Gulzar went to Mumbai. That's when Rahman called me and told me about the lines that were added in between the gaps. Rahman had recorded the female chorus in Malayalam and added it inside. He was bringing it straight to Gulzar sahib to translate it into Hindi. But Gulzar loved the lyrics after hearing them on the phone. “It was very beautiful. I suggested keeping the chorus in Malayalam. The overall sound should be a fusion of voices. Malayalam also has its own folk song styles and melodies. When Lataji and that chorus came together, it became beautiful,” says Gulzar.
