There are so many legendary Chinese musicians in Mandarin exclusively. I frequently feel sad that Americans never got to hear Jay Chou. I think it’s time. 2021. Being Asian is being normalized. JJ is in a unique position of under Chinese pop influence, training in SLS system of singing and speaks English. He is well positioned just as Singapore is in bridging the two worlds.

It's kind of necessary to put on an accent cos Singlish doesn't sound "proper". When you're a celebrity or a public figure of any sort and you're on screen there's something called 'image' you have to uphold. It's called professionalism. Same thing if you're an emcee. Whenever I hosted events I always had to work on things like my pronunciation, Singlish accent etc. That's what JJ did.
