Last year, it took Darvin Ham a very, very long time to settle on the starting lineup that Lakers fans-and especially THE LAKERS PLAYERS-wanted to see.
JJ Redick didn't even make it to training camp before landing in that spot. Speaking with Zach Lowe on his podcast, he said the group that starts will be the one that went 23-10 last season. That would be LeBron James, Anthony Davis, D'Angelo Russell, Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura. This isn't necessarily a blockbuster decision. First, that group was quite successful together last season. Second, there aren't exactly a ton of alternatives. Aside from Jarred Vanderbilt stepping in for Rui, how many different options does Redick really have, assuming these guys are all healthy?
But nonetheless, it's nice to get this sort of thing out of the way early, and Redick having the good sense to just go where everyone knows he should, and likely would anyway even with some sort of coachy, "we're all going to have to compete" posturing, is refreshing. If Darvin Ham had a tendency to overthink and overcomplicate, it's nice to see Redick isn't doing that with the starting lineup.
Moreover, settling on this now means the Lakers can go into training camp with a roadmap uncluttered by things that would unnecessarily take up time.
What else did Redick have to say? There was a lot in the interview (released a day before Redick will appear in El Segundo with Rob Pelinka in front of the media). He talked about LeBron and what it means to him for James to be "off ball." He talked about Bronny, about the perception many have that Redick "skipped the line," and more.
What should fans expect, and hope, to hear from him and Pelinka on Wednesday?
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: JJ Redick has a starting lineup!
SEGMENT 2: Redick on LeBron and the Lakers offense.
SEGMENT 3: What to expect from Redick and Pelinka on Wednesday.

Darvin was resistant to start Rui? He came in camp beat up then got hurt early and often. Vando got injured, Reaves was worn out and the fans called for him to be benched! How do laker fans not remember this? Laker fans praised the early shooting of Prince also. Will JJ be swayed by Laker fans whining is the true measure of a coach and the power he has.

Prince and Reddish shoudnt play in the starting 5. Hams mistake is relying too much on its veteran players who fighting for their next contract. Instead of playing players such as Christie and Jhs who are their building blocks for seasons to come

I don't know when the length of the NBA training camp was shortened, but the Lakers have what ... a two or three-day training camp before their first preseason game? For that reason, Redick doesn't have time to be uncertain about a starting lineup. Choose starters based on last season's performances and roll with it. If Redick sees the need to tinker with the lineup, he can do it early in the season.
@LockedOnLakers

I don't remember how much time lapses typically lapses between training camp opening and preseason game #1, but this doesn't feel unusual to me. And honestly, there's a decent chance that all five members of Redick's named starting five won't play in Friday's preseason opener. (Based on nothing but having watched decades of preseasons.) So I doubt this was about a time crunch. And while you're correct that Redick can always change the lineup as he sees fit during the season, like we mentioned during the show, coaches more often than not won't commit to anything this early for a multitude of reasons (including the creation of fake theater). But you hit the nail on the head when you said "roll with it." Especially with Vando out, there's no real "answer" for Redick to discover unless he creates questions for himself. So don't. There are enough real ones to deal with. Appreciate you watching. AK

As an avid JJ believer, I think something else gets glossed about the lakers’ job; and it’s that I don’t think it’s that desirable of a job at the moment. I don’t think the lakers had their pick of the litter of the best coaching prospects when they hired Ham or now with JJ, so that has to be factored in as well.

I was an advocate of bringing AR or D’Lo off the Bench bcuz of Their Defensive Shortcomings however, I’m glad AR/D’Lo/Rui/LBJ/AD have been named as Our Starting Group!!!! JJ Will have a chance to show His worth by maximizing this group’s potential via a Movement Offense and Team Defense. While, Developing Our 2nd Group and Creating Great Rotations!!! Ideally, Our 1st Group can give US 15-20 Points while holding the other Team to 10-12 Points by the Time Our 1st Bench Player comes in @ the 5/6 Min Mark of the 1st Qtr. Side Note - This might come across as Blasphemy however, Our Showtime 🪄 Championship Starting Groups weren’t Defensive Powerhouses but, They played Great Team Defense then, would bring in Coop to eliminate or slow down the Best Guard on the other team.

C'mon guys, I mean prancing up and down the floor, holding and doodling on a clip board and giving a contextual ra ra speech in the locker room does not constitute coaching experience.... Knowing the game, game planning knowing your assets and how you match up with your opponent and putting them in the best position to win and being real, honest and competent while addressing your locker room or individual player makes a good coach. JJ has 15 yrs worth of NBA experience preparing for this and a passionate student of the game makes him absolutely qualified for the job..... The so called "line" is bogus as amply proven by Darwin Ham... He operated like a rookie that learnt basketball in a 1yr crash course and sleeping at the wheel most of his time in Milwaukee.... That's the line we must respect???

I dont think JJ is that smart.. not as he thinks he is.. but with Darwin There is no competition.. I dont believe in new Jesus, but cant be worst as concern offense, rotations and line-up than Ham and Vogel.. VOGEL.. V O G E L.. let me Say it again. Vogel.. it's year that the Lakers are playing under bad coaches.. when LeBron was LeBron, and AD still could shoot, they almost covered that.. for One year, to be fair.. almost 2.. and then, no coaching/no offense plus Lebron slowing the tempo not being the king anymore, brought to what we have now.. Dlo, was fresh air.. no matter how bad he is in the playoffs.. we wouldnt be there.. and Austin should be.. everybody can take the Lakers out of slow/still action, JJ, Dlo, Bigfoot or Little green men, should be welcome..

I'm 69 and have watched the Lakers since 1965 and I say three's are good, I agree not enough three's were taken. JJ's greatest value could be developing schemes to get many more threes within the offensive rhythm. Past coaches (plural) have put too much pressure on threes which contributes to a lack of confidence and rhythm within the offense or lack there of.

Darvin doesn't "owe" me (or anybody in the media) an explanation for whatever decisions. (Nor are we "hurt about anything. We're recapping a situation and providing context, if for no other reason than not appearing to our audience like we're just taking shots without ever putting ourselves in front of Darvin.) But you're focusing on the wrong point here. It's one thing for someone covering the team to not understand why certain decisions are being made. It's quite another for THE PLAYERS to not understand why certain decisions are being made, which was the case here. The lineup mysteries were indicative of an overarching problem Darvin had last season, which ultimately led to him getting fired. If you make it about us (which *we* actually didn't), you're missing the point. AK

Putting aside that the seasons/situations may not necessarily be all that different, given the extreme roster continuity, we've largely brought up Darvin in a comparative sense to offer context for things that may be different under Redick. Once more is established under JJ, the less you're gonna hear about Darvin, just as you heard less about Vogel once more was established under Darvin. Appreciate you watching. AK
