These games are so stuffed with advertisements it's boring to watch. The players are making $60 mil a year. They don't need to charge a thousand dollars for a games package, they don't need to charge $300 for mid tickets to see a game live. They're leaving all the average fans behind. Magic, Bird and Jordan paved the way for the guys to make the money they are now.... guys like Embiid, Kawhi and lebron are paving the way for everyone to take major paycuts. LeBron will leave the NBA in a much worse position than when he found it

I watched every single Chicago Bulls game from the late 80's until Mike's retirement in 1998. Then I watched his return to the Wizards. The last full season of NBA basketball I watched was when the Detroit Pistons won in 2004. Since then, the game has become unbearable. The athletes are too friendly, the changed rules to make it more fast paced/open is extremely boring, and Adam Silver trying to make the NBA more like FIBA to make it more "global" is ridiculous. You cannot soften the league so that European players can succeed. All this "they're bigger, faster, and stronger" today than they were decades ago is BS. The record breaking three point shot attempts a game is killing this league. Couple that with "league pass" which is a rip off. The league is a mess. I hope it fails for good that's how bad this product is a disgrace to the legends that played when the league had the perfect balance. There's a reason why the 98 Finals is still the most watched Finals series in NBA history.

The problem with the game is there's no identifiable competition outside of a shooting contest. Defense is lacking, physicality is lacking, etc. The game is too start/stop, too many soft foul calls, too much complaining from the players, too many damn ads that they use every second of dead time to fill. It's not fun to watch. Shooting 3s in itself isn’t the problem. The problem is that guys who have no business shooting 3s are doing it. Priority 1 seems to be getting set up outside the perimeter to lob in uncontested shots every time. It’s safe, it’s predictable and it’s boring. Plus it’s basically giving the ball away or forcing rebound situations that If you even get the ball back it’s going back for an outside shot again. Varied offense used to make for more competitive play when it contributed to making more superstars. D rose, prime Westbrook, iverson, Carter. Where’s Lob city in today’s nba. It’s not steph curry’s fault. Guys are paid more than ever to use less effort and athleticism than what they’re capable of. I blame coaching and offensive systems cause why else would so many players be taking so many 3s? Cause you’re less likely to get hurt? Cause it’s easier? Or cause that’s plan A for most nba teams

Because of the defense that is allowed, once they removed the illegal defense rule and allowed you to roam freely on defense, this is the result of that. Back then you didn’t have to take a lot of long jump shots because it was much easier to get to the rim due to the illegal defense rule. Teams are loading up on isos which results in drive and kick for three. That’s why there’s most ball and player movement in this era.
@darrelladams488619 сағат бұрын
@@2robjenkinsdo you think the answer then is to reevaluate defensive rules? I’ve been thinking lately that any shots from inside the paint should also reward 3 points to encourage more players to drive the net or be back in position for those shots. I think that because it’s the hardest area to play in in basketball and requires more effort and athleticism to get into and get rebounds from; it should be rewarded more. Then you don’t just have to rely on the outside shot. I think offence will become more varied again and toughness and heart will return
@2robjenkins19 сағат бұрын
@darrelladams4886 the answer is stupid but it’s to make the court more narrow. It’s impossible now to make the close out to the corner and wing three off of ball movement. Teams figured out that if you make teams guard out to 28 feet it’s a lot harder to defend than running your offense from 18 feet in where you’re one step away from helping. Something I figured out a long time ago as a guard was that if I was a threat from 25 feet out it makes it that much harder to be guarded because you have to cover infinitely more space.

My thoughts are that the game has changed. And the league needs to be more proactive in making the product more enjoyable for the consumer. The reality is that BOTH JJ and Chuck are correct in different ways. The game is more skilled than it's ever been and it's also more analytically focused than it's ever been. The analytics say that shooting threes over twos is just a more efficient and better way to win basketball games. And that's what these teams and these players are ultimately paid to do. Win. And from Chuck's perspective, he's right that the quality of the product from a watching perspective is lower now because there are just so many threes being taken that it lacks an entertainment factor that used to be in the game to a higher degree. Blowouts seem to be more common and just watching guys take long-range shots on nearly every possession is monotonous. So what needs to change? The league needs to step in and address the product by making changes to the rules. Old heads are going to be wildly upset about changes to the rules, but ya know what? Times change. Baseball has changed, football has changed, hockey has changed. It's time for the NBA to change. Nick Wright had a great idea to make dunks worth three points. I love that. It's the most exciting play in the game and if it's worth three or four points with an and-one it would be electric. You could also install a relegation element to the league like they do in European soccer leagues that incorporates the G-League. Light a fire under the seat of these terrible teams. Finally, you could make wins and losses have point values like European soccer and the NHL. If you win by 10+ points you get 4 in the standings, win by 1-9 points you get 3 points in the standings. If you lose by 1-9 points you get 1 point. If you lose by more than 10 you get 0 points. If you lose by more than 20 you get -2 points. Something like that. If you installed a point system that encouraged the guys to go out and give it their all for four quarters to maintain points you wouldn't have issues with blowouts nearly as often. You wouldn't have issues with load management as often and the product for four quarters would just be better. You might even see defense return some more, but playing defense against guys in this era is incredibly difficult because of the hand-check rules as well as the speed and athleticism of the game. Another thing that JJ has specifically addressed in the past that he's absolutely correct about. Those are just some ideas but the NBA needs to change. The product needs a facelift, but there are absolutely ways to do it.
@markbartoszek858523 сағат бұрын
No need to overthink it. Just eliminate the 3 and the whole game changes for the better. The 3-point line wasn't always in the NBA.
@brett493223 сағат бұрын
@@markbartoszek8585 I mean no disrespect, but that's a bad suggestion. The game is better with the three-point line. It is far, far more interesting and the skill of shooting at distance should be rewarded. They were correct to add the three-point line. If you removed the three the game would lose much of its dynamic aspects. That said, maybe it would make more sense for three's to be fours and two's to be threes from an analytical perspective. That way the impact on the three in its current state would be less.
@innovance378822 сағат бұрын
The simple solution is to reduce the amount of games per season! But too much money is tied up in an 82 game season, so the easiest way to fix it is also the hardest way to fix it!! Which makes it actually unfixable. The other suggestions won't really change anything.

I really feel along with Curry. What changed everything was the growing demand for two-way players. Long gone are the days when you could get a great contract specializing in one thing. For example, Doug Christie was an elite defender team would have traded for, but he wasn't a scorer. So now people have to pick up a second skill to stay in the league. Unfortunately, shooting is a skill that stays with you long after your athleticism has faded.

IMO, bringing JJ Redick in to coach the Lakers over so many coaches who are ready (Sam Cassell, Mark Jackson, Lindsey Harding...) cheats the game. I agree with Charles Barkley, JJ Redick did all he could on his podcast to undermine Coach Ham and maybe Lebron even helped. To me that's cheating the game.

You can make the arguement they are getting more injured because they are more athletic and jumping higher and landing from height etc... You answered your own question. Elite players are faster and stronger and more skilled than in the past. i wont lie i dont watch as many basketball games right now because im a football fan at heart and both cfb and the nfl playoffs are heating up but when i do click on must see matchups or just random games, i dont have the same outrage that barkley and a bunch of these "nba fans" have. people intentionally look for see certain clips of bad plays and then say " this is why ratings are down" when thats not the case, and then like the old heads they are, they wanna blame 3 point shooting. they wanna say players are soft and to bring rivalries back as if teams like philly, boston, miami, lakers, denver, and warriors dont all have both past and current history of rivalries. all those teams listed, for the most part whenever they play each other the games are usually intense and come down to last second moments. nba media and fans just cant get it through their heads that they cannot compete with the nfl no matter who's playing. thats one of the major things that was a cause for this who viewership thing as well, comparing nfl and nba views as if nfl hasnt been the big brother for years makes no sense, also thew fact that fans have to pull out their wallet everytime they wanna watch a game is insane, nba does things like make it harder to watch local tv games then wonders why the views aren't the same.

NBA honestly needs to change the scoring system to 3’s and 4’s. The core of the issue is that the game is improperly balanced. The math says the best strategy for winning basketball games is to shoot a ton of 3’s. It isn’t some cultural shift, it’s just that players and coaches have uncovered the optimal strategy for this game and are exploiting a glaring hole in its construction.

It's not all the media heads that are making us not watch basketball. Now, there are only some games you can watch for free on TV and some not on TV and have to be paid. Even I am an MZ and I have no idea where else we can watch the NBA. Also, these days none of us like to watch TV. We all watch KZbin and now we don't even watch 10 minute long videos anymore because every media platform has shifted from regular videos to short 5-30 second videos that give all the story and highlights quick. Because we are all so used to these short videos, we all have a short term attention span as well. We would rather skip through and see the highlights of unimportant in-season regular games that NBA players aren't even trying or giving only their 50%. It's not worth our time. Now, if every player was playing their hearts out of every regular season game, then yes, maybe it will be intriguing to watch, but everyone is also doing load management, all of them have too much money in the bank to even care much about basketball, and all of them don't even need it anymore. We also think the same. It's not really worth our time to watch.
