I still work at a petco, i absolutely love my job as well and my aquatics. I could 100% see this happening especially if someone isnt communicating, atleast at my store we would have fired that individual because everyone knows what a live box looks like!

These pet stores are truly evil. I'm glad YOU actually cared. Yes, a few people care, but most, just want money && to go home or go about their business. They all probably said at Petco, "Well, they're JUST fish... who CARES!?!?" .. who cares?? I CARE! I'm so glad they got caught.. I know most pet stores flush their fish so they don't get caught. I can tell you what I believe could have happened, as well. Someone in the store was a thief. Someone who worked there was trying to steal fish and placed the live fish in the trash to pick up later. Happens a lot in the industry. As for the people making a TikTok at the dumpster for publicity, they need to get a life.

Sorry to hear this. I work for one of Petco stores on the west coast. It be great if we had a warehouse that would receive, quantine and deliver our own live animals to the stores. All staff should be trained to receive and stock live animals immediately regardless of what position youre in. It can get busy but regardless. I love working in the aquatics area. Lots of work and its not my position but i do it cause like you, i enjoy it. Loss prevention would be low and cost would be down. Happy people make happy animals. Sorry to hear about that JJ...also what is your opinion on getting rid of dead fish?

Their policy: they bag and freeze anything dead until the proper waste collector picks them up. My policy: Do whatever is least wasteful. I rarely have dead fish but when I do, I usually feed them to my crawfish.

Thanks for the video and pointing out it’s a “people” problem and not corporation problem. Too often judgement is easily and broadly cast on big name companies. Most horror stories are people related and not policy. The two Petco near me here in CT have phenomenal employees in animal care. The tanks, and all animals are in top shape, they care as if they are their own pets. The thing I notice is their immediate supervisors are just as good and caring. This sounds like a case of poor management or manager. As I’m sure this would not have happened if you worked that weekend. Btw why was someone going through the trash in the first place? I’m not suggesting it…but it could be speculated as a “set up”…..or “back door free giveaway” that got busted by a dumpster diver?

Dumpster diving at pet stores has a tendency to go viral if you find anything interesting. There are channels that cash in on it every chance they get

If I had the time and interest in running the whole store, the situation would be completely different. But since my real dream is building my own fish store and farming my own fish and plants, I followed my heart to do that full time.
