An extra thought: I watched this thing for as long as I could get away from me. My GoPro lost sight of it before my eyes did, and I never saw it just drop from the sky or even attempt to land itself. Even if the phone was still transmitting signal this thing has a pretty damn short range -- my iphones wifi range isn't that long to begin with. It should have disconnected and just fallen. A shame. :(

John Cuppi I really liked the gyro manoeuvres though, I think that if they'd come up with a radio transmitter that is connected to the phone and that will control the drone that would be amazing although it's so tiny anyways it is hard to see it. Or at least a return to home feature. that and a good camera would make this great

Yakir Gabay me too, the gyro control on the phone is what made this really fun to control otherwise it would have been just another phone controlled drone. I had at least 4 flights with Elfie prior to this video and got really good with the gyro controls. Perhaps this year we'll see something mid-range to a drone like the ZeroTech Dobby. Elfie is definitely, um, "low end." :)

It sucks but happens unfortunately.. Got my drone stuck in trees multiple times and eventually now it's stuck in another country because I didn't have space to take it with me, only later to find out that the shipping cost to my country is like buying a Phantom3..

Thanks for the video John Cuppi, I ordered one of these before I saw your video, it is a worry and the first thing I will do is after I have set it up I will set it on altitude hold low down and click my WIFI off on my iPhone to see if the drone stops and drops! If it dosent I will know NEVER to send it too high or too far that I cant get it back!

Ah it's fine, no big deal since this was a model I received for review. I am laughing at how this is one of my most popular videos of all time now. JY018 looks to be an "upgraded" version. I can only hope that maybe they saw this video and corrected the problem.

Why they don't just kill the motors on total signal loss as a standard thing for ALL aerial RCs. Heck all RCs period... Is beyond me. I had this happen with the JJRC H20 I recently reviewed. Luckily my daughter found it but still... This shouldn't be a thing at this point man!

unfortunately there is nothing that you can do to prevent this from happening. I agree, it is very hard to manage the wifi range and almost impossible to predict a phone crash. there is also a possibility that my elfie was defective. I wish I had it still so that I could do some tests of the failsafe. I'm curious, if you hold your eflie in your hand and power off your phone while it is still running, what happens? there are a number of things that could have gone wrong here and it would be nice to know if there are other ways the eflie can get stuck.

There is no reason for it. It's a gimmicky drone -- on Amazon, you will find it usually at $50. Chinese sellers like gearbest are selling it for $36.64 right now -- but you will wait 2 weeks or so for it to be shipped to you. I would never pay $50 for this. $20-$30, if that...

The orange charger is a USB device that will plug into a computer, or smartphone charger. The battery is then plugged into the front of the USB device. And you're welcome, I'm glad it was useful to you! :)

I also had a mini drone flyaway with the Cheerson CX-OF 😧! I pressed take of and it took of but it didn't stop going higher until I couldn't see it anymore. I could not do anything because it didn't react to my remote controller anymore. I searched really long for it but I didn't found it 😱😥. Maybe another one found it or maybe it is still laying anywhere, I don't know but I hope I will find it again 😕.

I honestly think your phone crash made the failsafe fail. I've seen a few ELFIEs go out of range and just land but these were Eachine E50 (not sure about JJRC) so maybe the phone failing actually sent bad code to the drone bypassing fail-safe ...Or again maybe the brand (not sure if they use the same components) because the JJRC H33 drone I bought for my son has a RTH (return to home) function that actually flew it further away .....I had to manually guide it back and it wasn't even at 15m away

Roger Can the phone crash is what lead to the flyaway, yes, but it should not be blamed for the failsafe "failing." My theory is that if there is anything that forcibly cuts the connection between elfie and the phone, during input (?) it gets confused and doesn't properly handle it. The scary thing is that a connection can be forcibly closed or terminated for a variety of reasons. So at any time if your phone has a critical failure OR the app crashes, this will fly away. Regardless of what data my phone sent to it, if the drone was programmed properly this would not have happened to me & many others. There's a saying in software development "don't ever trust user or device input, check and recheck." It seems this was missed during development of this product. Thanks for your feedback; it is possible that newer revisions of elfie may have addressed this issue. I wish I still had mine to do some failsafe testing...

This model was provided to me for review by Gearbest for unbiased review, so it is no major loss to me thankfully. GB are aware now and will get the feedback sent to JJRC. Hopefully the next elfie version has this fixed. Thanks for the comment! I really did like how it handled with the gyro. Phone control via touchscreen is quite difficult in general, but this wasn't too bad.

With the drone you can loss control just by not setting it up right . I pissed my self when it went off (sorry) but it made me giggle . But when setting wifi u must turn your mobile date off . And if near home wifi may be best to turn that off . As the drone will be trying to locate that wifi . If that makes sense .u was loving it be for it went away . But as I was watch a lot of vids on how to fly . Yours was so funny to watch . Sounds bad a . Lol did u get it back .

Thank you for the comment. I believe my phone is not squarely to blame here as well; this drone is just programmed incorrectly with a lack of a failsafe during a forcibly cut connection. I have to say that even though it is a "Cheap" drone by standards, ~$40 which is the going price for this thing could buy something a lot more fun in the low end market that WON'T fly away and make someone hate the hobby. :)

Yes that is very possible! My entire phone crashed and rebooted itself, though so I'm not sure if it was an app or just a glitch in iOS that cut me off. Though, once the drone got out of range of the phone (which is quite short), it should have noticed and dropped itself to the ground, or self-landed and *that* is my main complaint/concern. I'd have been totally cool with it if I saw the drone drop from the sky, but it never did, it just kept going. That's really bad.

Yakir Gabay I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean. I was in full control of this drone and I was not pushing it hard at all. It's not like I was behaving carelessly with it. Had my iPhone not crashed at that moment I probably would have had it. It was almost time to land, I wanted to demo a flip and that would have been the end of it. Very different outcome.

A close look at my screen will show that yes, it is jailbroken. But -- don't anyone be fooled. That has nothing to do with why the elfie flew away. It's only what MAY have caused my phone to crash, which in turn lead to the flyaway. I was never able to find the crash cause in the logs, and that is not a regular occurrence on my phone.
