Thank you my friend, I just adjusted the brand new brake assemblies from the rear twice with no change in holding power. About to blow a gasket when found your video and I work on clocks and springs a lot. I was going try to rig some spacers before watching now just running to Ace for a couple springs then get that ugly rejection sticker off windshield tomorrow. GREAT VIDEO!!!

Thanks Dave for the excellent video! my wife's 2010 Jeep has been to the mechanic twice for break adjustment and still won't hold! Now I know how to fix it right. Happy wife happy life!

Haha, I can relate totally - Min was a 2010 too and Jeep Dealer had no idea how to fix it, said it was as it was and nothing they could do about it.

Friggin' Jeep finally fixed this problem on the JLs. Remove 2 simple bolts at the back of the unit (from the back seats), gently lift the console, take your handy socket and slide it in and make on simple adjustment to tighten the brake lines. Really cant believe it took Jeep that many years to make the fix...

I had failing hand brake in dodge nitro 3 years in a row. Changed 2 times lever with drum, still had problems with passing mot. Finally I replaced cast drums with one drum, custom made out of stainless steel , and then drum with lines was welded permanently to lever. It took me around 40 hours to make custom drum out of stainless steel but it was worth it. Ever since hand brake was solid , car wouldnt moove on drive with hand brake on.

🟢cta1284 15.09’24- I went a different route on my 2013 JKU & did the clock spring fix back in SEP 2023 which no one else did. Here’s my solution…. JK Parking Brake Lever Repair (2013 JKU) •Repair adds a single wind on clock spring to re-tension parking cables. •The clock spring’s tension is not difficult to move. •Can be done with parking brake handle assembly in vehicle ITEMS NEEDED PULL LINE- •20 in. of 18ga wire (Stranded or solid, insulated or not) PLIERS- •Vise grip (Pull line handle) LEVERAGE TOOL- •Large screw driver, chisel or equivalent (Starts movement on clock spring) REPAIR PROCESS o Remove center console & associated wiring; makes the job easier. o Lower parking brake handle. o Cut 20 in. of 18ga wire. o Run wire 1/2 way through the bend of the clock spring’s hook that engages tab. (May need to push hook forward to get wire through) o Start a tight twist at the spring’s hook then continue twisting the wire together. o Run the twisted wire forward / down & feed it under clock spring towards rear of vehicle. o Attach vise grip to end of twisted wire. o The next step will require two movements at the same time- o 1) With a large screw driver, chisel or equivalent, push forward on clock spring hook & down in front while 2) pulling on the twisted wire with the vise grip. o Keep pulling until the hook lines up with the tab. o Shift hook over & slide hook back onto tab. o Re-install center console.

Thanks for this video, doing thos fix this weekend. Stupid design, should have been direct to wire and made a little panel that opened in the console for adjusting if need be.

We replaced the entire floor unit, hat rotors and shoes, adjusted multiple times, it still mediocre on hills. We also had to add spacers on both the cables (used split nuts)-its a design that is too clever for its own good
@JustAskDave7 жыл бұрын
Judith Hitchings - yep, a simple cable system would have been much better!

Did the split nut achieve the same result as the bungee method?

zzzzClockspring can be tightened using 400mm piece of lacing wire fed under the spring & a loop hooked on to the spring and pulled around to the back(eld with a 4mm rod) Wire again fed under the spring from front & pulled again to hook on the original lug. wire slipped off spring a few times. A couple of steel rulers down side of spring & housing might stop wire slipping offggg

Can you write down that Aussie word for the string? Sounded like "ockey strap" but when I search, it doesn't show up.
@JustAskDave Жыл бұрын
Haha, sorry about that! Yes it was occy strap I called it. Nickname as it looks like octopus tentacles! It looks like rope and filled with rubber to make it a stretchy cord. Often referred to as shock or bungee cord.
@kpopfan674 Жыл бұрын
@@JustAskDave No problem, thanks. Looks like it is what English people call a bungee cord. My car is a different brand from yours but the handbrake assembly looks virtually the same so I want to give your modification a go.
@JustAskDave Жыл бұрын
Ahh cool, good luck and hope it helps! On ours it turned out there was extra resistance in the cables from the hand brake mechanism to the wheels, most likely from dirt, mud and sand as you would expect from an offroad vehicle. That solution worked for me for the next 3 years until I sold it!
@TheDrapoel Жыл бұрын
Is it necessary to attach the steel cable in this way? Would it not work without removing the centre console? JK 2013
@JustAskDave Жыл бұрын
2013 may have been changed, this was in a 2010. The return spring was not strong enough so the extra spring was.needed.
@knifetoenail Жыл бұрын
It could be just maintenance. If you want to save yourself time and trouble. First try lubricating the area between the handle and were the springs are. My wrangle did the same thing and I fixed it with some lubricant. It has been working for 7 months so far.
@JustAskDave Жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, it had been replaced by the dealer and still no better, there was a little too much drag in the cable (dirt and dust etc). This fixed it! Car was only about 18 months old at the time, worked perfectly for another 3 years til I sold it.

That hook you put around that bolt is the bolt for the airbag module you'd probably be fine but those modules are sensitive as frig there is a small chance it may set off the air bags if the hook ever came off but as I said before you'll probably be fine
@JustAskDave6 жыл бұрын
Dillon gregorio - yeah it probably is, but it's a stud firmly attached to floor and there is only very little tension on the cord.

Does that cable you hooked up in there keep your brake in too much tension that your brakes are engaged when driving?
@JustAskDave10 жыл бұрын
Hi Tilley, if you look at the mechanism itself there is a large 'clock spring' keeping tension on the cable. What I found is this spring is no longer strong enough or possibly dirt and mud in the cables is adding resistance. This additional spring I have fitted is just to over come the lack of strength in the clock spring and keeps the cables taught but without activating the drum shoes (the springs in the drum are stronger than the clock spring and helper spring).

Overkill - just adjust your e brake at the tire! If this doesnt work its time to replace the pads.
@JustAskDave5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Eat It - however there is no adjustment at the tyre for this part of the parking brake system, only for the pad position. This is an overly complex system for a parking brake and this ensures the park brake lever system is operating correctly. Without doing this it would not have passed road worthy inspection as the park brake lever rises too high before engaging, or not engaging properly at all.
@kylelever4 жыл бұрын
@@JustAskDave I love these people commenting about adjusting the pads at the wheel. No clue what they are taking about. I'm on my second JK and I still deal with this lever position problem. Thanks for the vid. Prefect thing to get my mind going on a solution.

After a lifetime of working on vehicles (not jeep), I have never come across a more complicated USELESS dangerous, and unreliable system very badly engineered. A simple adjusting screw on the short cable would suffice and quality cables that do not stretch as much. Another improvement would be to look at the mechanical advantage mechanism in the brake drum which would require less tension on the cables My Toyota surf is 32 years old and has never had an issue with the cables stretching
