Mam isn't rule 15 (The rich ,the poor ,the old) resembles with rule 10 (collective noun), where they behaves as a unit and singular verb is used, here also this community behaves as a single unit then why it contradicts with rule 10? The heard of cows is/are grazing in the field. The rich is/are not always happy The young is/are participating in the competitive exams

Hello mam! I have doubt regarding the use of verb!.. As per the subject verb agreement rule ,we have to use the verb as per the first subject in case of two subjects are being taken in a sentence.. But there is another rule according to we have to use the Verb according to the nearest subject if two subjects are being taken in a sentence ... Please clarify Thank you 🙏🙏

Hello Suheel, When conjunctions like as well as, with, along with, in addition to, and not, accompanied by etc are used for two subjects..we use verb according to ist subject.

And when other conjunctions are used like or, nor, either or, neither nor, not only but also etc. We use verb according to second or nearer subject. Hope this clarifies your doubt.😊
