With the Jeep Wrangler Jk Hemi swap build coming to a close, it’s time to take a look at a full price breakdown.
There are a lot of ways to do a DIY Hemi swap. Some ways can be more expensive, and others can be more budget friendly.
For my Jeep V8 swap, I decided to keep it easy in some aspects, while saving some money in other areas. Using Jeep speed shop components for the swap allowed the project to go very smoothly. The install of the engine and trans isn’t difficult at all. The JSS wiring harness and computer also made it extremely easy.
Overall, the project wasn’t overly complicated and it’s something I believe most people can do themselves.
Sure, you could drop your Wrangler off at a shop and have them install it for $32k... but doing it yourself can be a lot more reasonable to the average person,
Sure, it’s still a lot of money, however it’s something you can save up for and buy parts as your budget allows.
Having the 6.4 (392) Hemi in a jeep is amazing. 485 horsepower is insane, and I can see why Jeep wanted to offer this (as well as why they are asking a premium price). It is a blast to drive, and even the 5.7 Hemi would be an amazing choice.
I know I didn’t talk about Mpg in this video, I ran out of time, it will be covered in a future video.
Now a lot of people always ask about supercharger/turbo Jeep wranglers vs a Hemi swap.
Sure... boosting your V6 will make a lot of power, but it’s not going to last forever. It is a short term power gain. Eventually the v6 will blow up or die on you from all the added stress on the engine. Whereas a v8 is designed for the power and will give you no issues for many years with proper maintenance.
Ask around, see how many people have supercharged their jeep and blew it up (and then ended up going with a V8)... I only know 2-3 people who have had a supercharged Jk last more than 3 years and over 30k miles... so it’s up to you!
This DIY Hemi swap made my Jeep fun to drive again, at a reasonable price!

I thought the exact same thing...anybody who actually inquires about mpg shouldn't be doing a swap...ever! My v8 yj gets 10mpg and damn proud of it. Also sick of people saying, "your time is worth money". Of coarse it is if you're doing for someone else. If it's for your own project, it's considered a hobby and a labor of love. Love it when people make their things and do their own work. Great job on the swap! I guessed $14k

There arent many places I can take my jeep and know for a fact he wont bull shit you, he helped me with the most baffling steering issue at no cost. Ordered me the parts at cost to him and let me drive his 6.4 hemi jeep. lol. Stand up dude. And great videos man. This was an awesome series, its pretty unreal how places ask no less than 30k

Heck, I was looking up mounted jacks, rim and tire packages, light bars, and even after market guage cluster replacements long before I even purchased my jeep 😂. Now I finally bought the Jeep and I'm about half way there as far as completing the build I want. But it's always fun to find new future mods. Lol. People who say “is your time not worth anything” are a joke. Yes, it is. It’s worth the end product for half the price. My time is essentially worth the $15,000 more it would cost to pay someone else to do it. Instead, I get the knowledge and pride to say I did it myself. Wayy better than paying someone else to do it.

I swapped out the straight six in my 1981 CJ8 Jeep Scrambler for a 430HP LS3 hooked to a built 700R4, Dana 300 transfer case, and a Dynatrac Dana 60 posi rear-end. I put a Dynatrac 44 up front, and topped it off with a Lokar floor shifter, and a full Corsa SS exhaust. New advanced frameworks box frame, all new body kit, 4" lift, lots of chrome, all new corvette red paint, hardwood rear floor. A labor of love, and I got back 40 cents on the dollar when I sold it after 9 years. I think I only reused the VIN plate and some plastic ducting. Still... I would do it again.

We own a 2017 and a 2019, my 17 is a 5 speed, my wifes 19 is an 8 speed. The 8 speed is an absolute game changer in how the jeeps drive. My rubicon has lower gearing but her 8 speed will outrun mine all day long without breaking a sweat. Now I just need to V8 swap mine so I can have the 8 speed lol, being disabled that will never happen. I can't even afford to put a new windshield in mine now, let alone lift it and engine swap it.

Unfortunately it doesn't work like that most of the time. You never get the money back that you put into your project. It would be worth a bit more if a well known shop did it vs a guy in his garage did it. It's a sweet project but you should never modify you car expecting it to gain value. Only worth doing it for the experience building it and the fun of driving it.

HP Tuners is a good option to modify your tune. You can log your existing tune and modify it yourself, or email it to a professional for a custom tune. It also lets you change the easy stuff like tire size and gear ratio. The upside is you can also use it on multiple vehicles, multiple manufacturers, etc. The downside is it’s a little pricey. But with a stock tune you’re leaving a lot of hp and torque on the table, and it sounds like you need some tweaks to your existing tune anyway.

my 3.8 JKU has a ripp supercharger and am sitting at 46K mileage without a single issue. those who blow up their supercharged V6 must be treating it like a sports car at the quarter mile track and romping the go pedal at every stoplight. I don't doubt the durability of the V8 but a $6k supercharger was much easier to save for compared to a $25-30k motor swap.

An older 5.7 block with whatever internals desired, eagle heads and a truck intake would be wicked too. Could also stay manual with some of the adapters out there, with an SRT/6speed bellhousing- or whatever really- there's actually some good options for the Hemi. Given the cost of a 392 factory jeep (which has a lot of extra cool stuff for sure) I am always surprised this swap isn't more common. Given the cost of the swap electronics- why not go full standalone? I assume the transmission- but there are solutions for that as well that are also tunable. BMW guys are running them in some cool swaps. Also amazed how many people will start a swap but aren't willing to make their own/repurpose junkyard stuff to keep costs reasonable. The Miata community is a perfect example. It's easy to spend $30k on a swap, but plenty of folks have done them DIY for 2-3k as a starting point. If you don't exceed 250-300hp (which is plenty) then the rest of the factory stuff can be replaced slowly as you go. Makes modern 4 cylinders (Toyota 2AR is my plan I think- should bolt to some cheap, smaller 4cyl Tacoma 5 speeds, requiring only a custom D/S, reuse the rear end, where a lot of cost can come from. Would prefer ITB 1UZ, but alas they are not as cheap and plentiful as they used to be- and the 2AR will nearly compete for power with much less complexity.) and stuff like the 1UZ just perfect for it. But LSX and all the sudden you built a half ass Cobra that... could have just been a FF 65 coupe or Roadster and end up in a similar spot, without throwing half a car away.

I'm so glad I found your chanel. Before I go to your other videos I had a few questions that you may know the answers for. 1- Disregarding price, should I go 5.7 or 6.4 in a JK. 2- I really love a manual trans (have the 3.8l with a 6 speed) but if the 8 speed is leaps better I may give in. And last 3- Would you suggest finding used 1 ton axles or just buy new? Thanks!!

Is that the washer fluid res in the front corner on the driver's side? If so, maybe find a relocation spot for that bottle and route the intake to that corner. Seems like you could then easily find a way to get some fresh air to the filter. Love this build!

Great videos as always! I'm playing with this idea as well I have a 2017 JKU Rubicon (auto Transmission). I am interested in just doing the 5.7 Hemi if I were to try this. As far as transmission I would just need to replace bell housing and Torque convertor you mentioned, additionally I'm still running the Dana 44's with 4:88 gears, would this be an issue with this engine, and would an axle swap be required as well to handle the extra power/torque? Thanks Great video!

If you are not mechanically inclined or have a shop in your house or have access or hook up to a wrecking yard, then you will pay $30-40K for a turn key hemi for a pro to do it. If you have everything I mentioned then you will spend on a junk yard hemi 6.4 and ect. Items $3-6k. And the canbus system is not difficult to use or even program, wire harness fabrication is easy.

I had a Shop do my 6.4Liter back in 2014. They removed the body and they used an AEV kit, 5 speed auto, new crate 6.4. $ 20K. My friends and I built the rest of the Jeep later on. So the labor on mine was at $ 5K . I got the engine for $6600.00. The parts cost were almost the same as yours, the kit had everything needed. The labor may be more now but the swap turned out great with just a couple bugs to iron out early on. The hood you showed would work better than my AEV hood I believe because it would vent the engine compartment which traps a lot of heat on a JK. I later installed a C & R racing radiator which was more efficient than the one in the kit. The Jeep was as reliable as a stock 3.6. I couldn't stand that sorry Assed 3.6 at altitude. Once you drive a V8 Wrangler you will want one guaranteed ! My mileage in town 13 - 14. Highway 15 - 16.5. My intake was on the passenger side in cold air box isolated from the engine compartment so my IAT's were always good. The manifold as you said was molded and flipped to the other side. You did a great job, it sounds & runs great.

Excellent video Ben. You mentioned an issue with the TCM in the trans and the computer on the engine. I'm doing a 5.7L, Todd and Liz know that. My TCM is with them being reflashed. Is it a different flash for the 5.7L...or is it the same as the 6.4L? I'll have to ask them and see. I'd like to prevent the issue you saw with accelerating.

I spent a year trying to find anyone that was smart enough to wire my swap. Nobody can do it they say. I was going to swap into my jeep TJ my 2006 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S 512 hp aluminum twin turbo V8 with the 6spd auto and transfer case, yup the Cayenne has low range. But why put it in if nobody can make it run, right?

Ive had 3 wranglers a 3.5l HO and 2 3.8ls. The biggest problem with these are the underpowered engines. This was a missed opportunity by stellantis. 5.7l would have been the perfect powertrain. After bumpers, tires and other mods these things are dogs. The 3.8L even gets worse gas mileage than a hemi 5.7l hemi engine. I just dont understand why mopar chose the minivan engine for these. From a cost/inventory standpoint i get it. I promise if 5.7l jeeps were an option sales would have been off the charts.
