JL Collins!!! ❤ I followed his Simple Path to Wealth and watched every possible video of his interviews. My favorite is the one held at Google because that was my turning point. My husband and I started saving in 2019 with $3000 and we are on our way to half a million in net worth by next year. So excited to celebrate that milestone when it comes. His method worked for us and we will continue to follow it. Thank you, JL Collins!! ❤

About at the halfway point in our debt free journey, I read The Simple Path to Wealth. It was that book that got me moving into investing via index funds. I'm giving both of my kids this book for Christmas this year.

Something I don't understand from guest JL Collins: he encourages renting our housing over buying. But all my life I've been told that buying a home is the best way to build equity and purchasing power. Renters can't do that as easily. Another downside to renting: More often than not, the landlord says No Pets! Or puts a restriction on the pet's size for potential applicants. Renters also are at the mercy of landlords deciding to put the rental up for sale and giving renters notice to vacate due to buyers wanting to move in themselves. Renting is really rough! I can't agree with Collins' glowing viewpoint on renting longterm instead of buying.

probably why JL owns a home.
@nraghu998 ай бұрын
No with renting the rent is the naximum you wll pay. with owning the mortgage is the minimum you will pay. Add taxes, HOA fees, insurance, repairs, remodelling, buying and selling fees. so add 50% to your mortgage that is your true cost

Interesting about buying a property. And how not doing it can enable you to live in lots of different interesting places. I'm in the UK where everyone is obsessed with buying. I bought at age 24 (with parental help) and it has turned out to be a sound investment. My mortgage payment is half what it would cost to rent this place. It will be paid off in 4 years when I will be 45. I will have lots more money at that point than I had at 24 (given my investment in a Vanguard global index fund!) so will be able to do plenty of travelling. (I also have a remote job).

His view on housing seems convenient for a boomer tbh... He has not convinced me, ill re-reads his arguments but if you are from the UK - renting to me seems just a total waste
@tiffanymorris73998 ай бұрын
@@James_36 i live in the UK and I don't think renting is a total waste! It frees you from paying for everything that breaks and if you don't know where you want to live for the next ten years it keeps life flexible.

@@tiffanymorris7399 I made 150k in 3 years buying my property you think you going to convince me renting in this country is better ? Let alone what you get for the rental is dire alone

I am so ready to move out of my paid-off mortgage home because I'm exhausted from all of the responsibilities. New appliances will cost me more than ten thousand dollars within the next six weeks. I plan to move into a high-end condo in a few years.

Hmm interesting, it almost sounds like FU money is a more fun way to say a really solid Emergency Fund. For me personally, it wasn't until I had $40k in the bank where I felt confident enough to go out on my own with my business (no family or kids to consider)
@hanwagu9967 Жыл бұрын
yeah, i'm not sure what FU money means here. FU money to me has always meant enough money to be able to do what you want to do whenever and wherever you want to do it.

How come it wasn’t mentioned that the housing portion of today’s young adult budget is much higher percentage wise than the boomer counter parts budget?
@jackk0911 ай бұрын
BUY A HOUSE! Especially if you plan on being around for a few years. Your mortgage payment pretty much stays the same (it will go up some due to taxes and insurance) and when you leave that house, you get paid the equity(10's of thousands of dollars if not more), when you leave your rental, you leave with nothing.

Prediction: the thesis will be that millennials that have a living wage are doing better (which is not all of us, or even most of us). The rest....not so much.
