How much brighter is the 3.5W version than this 1.6W version?
@Darktron
@Darktron Жыл бұрын
@Sodium Syndicate is noticeably brighter but if you want the brightest I would go with green lasers JLasers has a 700mw one I have not tried this model but I do have a 1,100mw green and is very bright.

the 3rd balloon would pop faster if you jab the laser at it several times. the beam hits harder the harder you jab.

Great review! Is it ok to look at the beam when it's pointed in the night sky without safety glasses? Would it still be safe as long as it doesn't hit an object or you look at the spot? Or must you wear safety glasses whenever you're using it no matter the situation? Thanks.

I'm not an expert but my understanding is it's safe in that situation

Jesus guys, PLEASE spend the extra time and money getting a real pair of laser safety goggles if you are going to operate a laser like this. 1.5 watts is a very serious amount of visible radiation power, and a criteria of simply "well the goggles are yellow and I can't see the beam on a piece of paper through them" is just not good enough. The goggles used should be properly laser rated with a clear OD value shown on them when using beams with a power this high (think of OD as simply the number of "nines" as a percent of blocked light, eg. an OD4 goggle blocks 99.99% light at a specific wavelength, and an OD 8 blocks 99.999999% of light, etc.). In fact, I found a pair at NoIR (lens 50) that provide good OD4 blocking capability at 450nm for only $15 so you really don't have to spend much on this sort of thing if you look around. I work with ultrahigh power (multi gigawatt) lasers and we've used that brand and others like Honeywell (though they're now out of the business) for many years now. Will the cheap yellow uvex whatevers probably protect your eyes well enough from 1.5W of 450nm light? Yeah maybe; I'm aware that the technology here is very basic, just dye dissolved in polycarbonate plastic, but why even risk it at all? I would never ever EVER trust my eyes with a pair of random Chinese crap goggles off of Amazon when using a light source this powerful. Your retina will never grow back, it's worth it to get quality certified name brand laser protective goggles when using anything over 50mW.

@LiquidRetro 2 жыл бұрын
This is the glasses the maker uses as well. Uvex isn't some random Chinese brand either it's Honeywell. What brand and model would you recommend. Give me a specific recommendation with a post like that.

@@LiquidRetro I'll be totally blunt, if those are the goggles the laser manufacturer is using and recommending, he's a fool and opening himself up not only to the possibility of personal injury, but major litigation. I'm aware that UVEX is a respectable company and I use their goggles myself for protection from deuterium lamp light and 365nm UV LEDs. But the pair of goggles you link to in the description aren't ANSI Z136.1 rated for protection against laser light and that's important because it means you don't ever really know for sure how much light they're actually blocking. Blue light, as used with this laser is also particularly dangerous because it's so efficiently absorbed by the red retina - the heating is instant and much less forgiving than red or infrared light which is more poorly absorbed. If the goggles you have happen to be blocking 99.99% of light (OD4) at 450nm, you're probably fine at a power of 1.5 watts, if they're only blocking 99% of the light (OD2), you'll have permanent retinal injury almost instantly if you accidentally view the beam through them. I work at a major laser driven inertial nuclear fusion research facility and while our preferred laser goggle manufacturer has changed several times over the years and will certainly change again eventually, right now the preferred source is NoIR. If you go to their website (I can't link to it or shitty youtube will just delete the comment), you can search their polymer filters by blocked wavelength and then by goggle style. You want the 50 filter and the 700 or 900 style frames for $15 (CHEAPER than the non-rated yellow uvex generic ones on Amazon!). They're OD4 at 450nm as you can see from the searchable spectral plot on the page.

Does the Infrared burn out the retina? What if you never actually look at the diode and always only look at the reflected beam on objects?
@Muonium1
@Muonium1 11 ай бұрын
@@the_famous_reply_guy infrared can absolutely burn the retina at high powers. Specular reflections of any continuous wave laser over 5 milliwatts are ALWAYS dangerous to view, diffuse reflections such as off of matte painted walls are safe to view up to about 100 milliwatts.
