A chain drive would be simple. Two sprockets, 520 motorcycle chain, no slip, lasts longer.

The idler allows the prop to unload by slipping in the slack side. I think the Valley Engineering's design is pure genius the way the adjuster works. Chain would allow harmonics to tear things up.

The chain drive would be to hard on the engine and likely break. The slip allows the engine to run the prop and doesn't let the prop run the engine. It also takes out the harmonic resonance which makes it easier on the air frame as well as an overall smoother engine.

Valley Engineering the chain would likely never break since they use smaller ones than the five twenties in drag racing motorcycles. Also it would likely never damage the engine.

​@@UncleKennysPlace that is why engines have the flywheel to absorb the harmonic resonance. Go karts has been running for decades with chains. I have also seen chain drives on Hovercraft with automobile engines. Another good is that the chain drive has less wear on the crankshaft bearing since it doesn't require much tension.

These engines are super easy to get power out of.. valve spring cam piston and Rod and you probably get a lot more than 50. There's a whole group of these guys that are running them on nitromethane tractor pulling as well as just methanol. Tons of performance parts.

That being said, there are plenty of airplanes that can be built for $15,000+/- with these industrial motors, including the MC30 Luciole, SD-1 Minisport, Quickie Q1, various Bowers and Fisher designs. Most are wood. The Q1 is foam covered in fiberglass. Plans are available for all of these.
