Madams&Sirs, the whole issue of indian partition is still alive even after 70 years mainly because it was not planned. It just happened spontaneously. Mr Jinnah bears the burden of this monumental mistake. All Mr Jinnah wanted and fought for was land, and was totally unconcerned about Indian Muslims and hindus in Pakistan. Mr Jinnah was totally apathetic about human suffering of both Muslims and hindus. His 1st act after 15 Aug 1947 was to help muslim tribal hordes to attack J&K. This is a good example of his character.

It’s surprising no Sikh Scholars ever included Sikhs were most effected .

Well all groups think they are the most affected. Believe me though, Hindus are pound for pound very poorly represented among historians...and the ones that do exist tend to be anti-Hindu for the most part

That is an unnecessary and contentious statement. It was a tragedy that affected everyone who lived through it and beyond.

Actually they will only include Punjabi Muslims and a few slavish Hindus, because this literary event has actually been largely funded by the West to run their agenda. They don't want to see a dysfunctional Pakistan, which has now become a burden for them.

Partition has been good for India long term. Shifted the problems outside the defined nation state.

Partition allowed India to have 1.non aligned foreign policy , 2.saved India from civil war, 3.provided first time a buffer state between Central asia and india, security we are looking for thousands of years 4.delhi ,mumbai ,Bangalore, Chennai saved from daily sucide blast, terrorist attacks. 5. India abolished separate electorates biggest obstacle in path of functioning democracy.

Protection of minority rights is essential for a democratic system of government to succeed. Since religion was only one basis for identifying minorities, using religion as the sole basis for defining which minority must be protected to the exclusion of other minorities, whether defined by religion or other identifier(s), not only doomed the subcontinent to continual strife but was also dishonest as far as minorities in general are concerned.

They do not know much of history, particularly Ayesha Jalal, who wanted to prove that Jinnah was a secular person but has failed so far.

I agree with urvashi butalia dispense with the martinet - like ceremony at wagah....make a enclave like kartarpur sahib and have a partition museum where people from both sides can meet and spread harmony at a human to human level

Maybe she could be crisper, but I hope you do know that these are some of the top historians of the Indian partition. Vazira has written an excellent book on the subject. I wish people wouldn't be so quick to dismiss things. The discussion is anything but half-assed. Sam 7748 and Bose certainly seem to be.

In my opinion the only way to get a real understanding of how the tragedy of partition happened, is to look at it in economic terms. When the British and other European traders entered into India it accounted for roughly 25% of world trade. When the British left 200 years later they had robbed its wealth to such an extent that in 1947 it only accounted for about 4% or less. Through the policy of divide and rule the British successfully created separate religious based identities and it was surely inevitable that these would turn on each other as they struggled for power in the ruins of what had once been the powerful economy on Earth. As these identities had been created by Europeans to a large extent they hardly knew who they were let alone who the the others were. In an atmosphere of great fear brought about through economic deprivation, poverty and starvation it was easy for ruthless fascist thugs to organise the killings. Throughout human history from ancient times to Ruanda that is always the way of it.

Madams&Sirs, the 2nd part of Lahore resolution, the minority rights was a totally irrelevant and intact was contrary to Mr Jinnah's basic premise : that hindus and muslims can not live together, though living together for 1200 years starting 712 AD. The 2nd part of Lahore resolution should have been the safe transfer of minorities across partitioned india. And this most important aspect was never addressed resulting in a holocaust amounting to minor genocide and ethnic cleansing.

The scholars are very diplomatic in expressing their view in polite way. However , the general public the sentiments aroused easily. What was the need of partition rather ego clash of Nehru and Jinna . If communal clash is dealt with iron hand they will subside . Even now Shia are killed by Sunni in Pakistan. Therefore is there need send them Iran as it is Shia country ??
